"Mandi" young GSD/Husky nearly ready for a forever home...

"Mandi" - Mandi is a young medium-large sized female German Shepherd mix (probably GSD x Husky).  We believe she is just under a year old.  She has gone through one heat cycle and is being spayed next week.  Mandi was found as a stray and taken in by Ionia County Animal Control.  Their shelter is very small and under-funded, so she was pulled from there to save her from euthanasia.  At that time, she was very emaciated, suffering from kennel cough, and had a large abscess in her mouth.  The shelter manager treated the abscess with antibiotic.  After she was pulled, she was taken to a vet and the abscess had heeled and her kennel cough had subsided.  The main cause of her being emaciated was whip worms.  She was treated with Drontal and boarded at the vet for a week to recover, gain weight, and await her pre-arranged transport to a temporary home.  From there, she was transported to the east side of the state where she went to "doggy detox" at a rescue where her job was to relax, gain wait, and recover from being caged at the filthy shelter.  She has been here for about a month and now we are looking for a forever home for Mandi.

Mandi is very social, sweet, and accepting of all people so far.  There were no incidents with any type of people (large man, child, vet, vet techs, pet store employees...).  She likes attention and wants to stay with people.  Sometimes she can be a bit shy at first, but she warms up very quickly and seems very responsive to humans.  She would probably be easy to train.  She was responsive to clicker training in just one 5 minute session.  She has exhibited some aggressive behavior towards other dogs in close proximity.  At this time, we cannot say whether this is her true temperament, or if this was due to circumstances of being abandoned and starved.  However, when we initially evaluated her at the shelter, she was playing and being social with other dogs.  As a precaution, she should go to a home with no other pets, unless someone has experience in this area and is willing to work with Mandi.  Also due to being abandoned and moved around a bit, she has some separation anxiety.  She would be best in a home where someone is home all or part of the day, so she is not crated more than a few hours at a time, at least initially.  With patience and training, separation anxiety can be overcome.

Mandy loves people and would make a very gentle, loving pet, she just needs someone to show her she is safe forever and has a reason to trust humans again.

I sure hope Mandi finds a home.  She looks like such a sweetie.  She also looks like she's GSD/Norwegian Elkhound mix instead of Husky.

    How do you do?

Mandi has been spayed and no longer seems dog aggressive now that she is healthy and adjusted.  She has put her weight back on and now plays with other dogs.
