    Anyone trial in OH/MI/IN area?

Due to some recent events, I have left my former training club. They hosted all of the trials I used to compete in and are the only in the area to host NADAC. So now that I'm unable to enter their trials, I am looking into starting AKC. This will be my first attempt at AKC, and hopefully a new beginning. It has all just been a big ugly mess. Unfortunately I have lost all of my training/agility friends and am now looking to make new ones. And being that this will be a new beginning in a venue I am not experienced in, I would love to have someone that could help me learn the ropes of AKC agility and act as a friend and mentor.

I'm in the very NW corner of Ohio, but plan on perhaps traveling to Sylvania for the trial in May. I may also eventually look to trial in Ann Arbor area in MI.

I have many dog acquaintances who trial in AKC and CPE.  It seems they are trialing every weekend!  I think you will find plenty in the Detroit - Ann Arbor - Lansing stretch.  There is WAY more going on out there than in west Michigan.  Grand Rapids has an agility club that hosts AKC trials every year, but we may be a little far for you.  My dog's breeder hosts 2 CPE trials - July and October - and she is in Marshall, MI.  Have you considered CPE?

I've been trialing each year in CPE for about 10 years now. I could surely still trial in CPE, but am just not a fan of all the games. Too many, IMO. But if it comes down to AKC and CPE the only trials available to me, I surely wouldn't refuse to compete in CPE, but wouldn't do so competitively, but more for trialing experience and fun.

Marshall, MI isn't too far away. About 1.5 hours.

The Ann Arbor training club is very active, so is Kalamzoo.  You have some pretty big UKC events up in your neck of the woods (NWO).  You can trial AKC UKC at Gem City in Dayton (West Central OH) and then there is Cincinnati with 3 or 4 kennel clubs hosting events year round.  Then there is Columbus All Breed Training club with trials.

I'm in Ohio too but NE Ohio. LOTS of trials here especially at: http://www.k9athletecenter.com/

Consider ASCA as well. I have never done NADAC but am told ASCA courses are similar by some people. ASCA does tend to have very fast course times though.

I train in Ann Arbor, both with the Ann Arbor Dog Training Club and at Canine Sports Rec.  I compete in AKC at trials within a hour of Ann Arbor (I am very lucky that I have almost monthly trials within 5 miles of my house).  The people are great, very friendly and supportive.  The trial in Sylvania is very nice.  The flooring is very nice and the trial is well run.  The trials at Canine Sports Rec are very nice also.  The venue is great and since it is a one ring venue, you can watch everything going on and don't have to worry about conflicts.  The Ann Arbor Dog Training spring trials were this weekend and the weather was perfect.  These trials are so much fun, the atmosphere is very relaxed yet the competition is fierce.

One great way to make friends and learn the ropes is to volunteer at a trial, plus you usually get lunch (the Capital City Canine trials, held around Lansing have the best lunch spreads).

    Good Luck

Re: Anyone trial in OH/MI/IN area?

I've been working almost every trial I have ever competed in for 10 years. So of course, the first thing I thought of to do was to volunteer at another trial. I can't imagine sitting around and doing nothing all day between runs. When I send in my entry fee, I will also be sending in volunteer form to help with course setting, leash running, or bar setting during the trial.

I've been looking on Infodog and finding a lot of trials in Dexter. Dexter and Ann Arbor are probably two of the closest locations besides Sylvania. I'm not sure if I'll get to compete much because am not exactly rich, but do hope to compete at least twice more.

I have not competed in Dexter, but I have been to the location. I hope to play there soon too. They do have several events. Ann Arbor Dog Training does too.

I compete in USDAA and CPE in IN and OH.  Indianapolis has about 6 trials a year and there are two AKC clubs trying to host a few trials as well.  I don't do AKC so can't help you there.

Re: Anyone trial in OH/MI/IN area?

The trials in Dexter are at Canine Sports Rec and the trials in Ann Arbor are at Ann Arbor Dog Training Club.  Oddly, both locations would be about the same distance from you.  Of course AADTC will be having a trial at Canine Sports Rec this summer, I believe.  Canine Sports Rec is air conditioned which is critical during the summer.

If you want to get to know more people, volunteer to be a leash runner or even better a sheet runner (the person who runs the scribe sheets to the computer people).

It looks like I should be expecting a much longer recovery from Marq's neuter. I don't believe he'll be able to trial in May at Sylvania. So new plans, if he is not recovered, my retired cocker spaniel will come out of retirement for one day. :D

Have you already entered?  I am not sure when the entry closes (3 weeks before the show date at the latest), since I am not entering this year, but I don't think you can change your entry from one dog to another after it has been submitted.  Trials have not been filling as much as a year or so ago, but they may have filled before you can send in a new entry.

Re: Anyone trial in OH/MI/IN area?

I looked and the entry closes on the 29th but the draw has already happened.  I would contact the trial secretary and see if it filled.  If you already entered but do not think you dog can make it, contact the trial secretary before closing and you can get a refund.  At this point, you will have to decide which dog you are going to take to the trials.

Must have been pretty nasty if you lost all your friends and can no longer even enter the trials held by the club.....

Unfortunately, yes. Nasty on their part, polite and professional on mine. I will not get into the details here on the forum however. It is just a sad and unfortunate situation all around, though I am proud to have at least turned one person positive in that club before my time was up there. So I am glad to say that despite the former trainers warnings and threats agaisnt talking to me, I've now got one friend back. :) Now it is time to move on to better trainers and learn true, good methods.

Golden, thankyou SO mcuh for being so helpful. It's really appreciated. Though... I have been trialing for 10 years. I'm well aware that you can't just enter one dog and bring another. :) No dog has yet been entered. I did not want to enter him until I knew he'd be recovered from his neuter this past week, though because of the set back, I will probably enter my cocker spaniel instead. However, being that with the extra vet cost from his complications, and my classes starting up, I may have to forgo entering the trial at all. Though I truly certainly do still hope to volunteer. And being that it is nearing closing time, what will probably happen is that I simply won't be able to enter any of my dogs and will just go to volunteer.
