Dublin took one for the team....got hit with a ball in the eye

I am so freaked out looking at him.  My husband was playing with a squishy green soft rubber ball with Dub and Grandma's Golden today in the yard.  He whipped a fairly hard ball to the outfield to Sonny and Dublin sort of ran in front of it at close range from what he says.  (I am pissy with him right now for hurting my baby boy).  Dublin let out a yelp and ran after getting hit in the left eye.  He has never just layed down at Grandma's house ever.  HE is there often and never stops playing.  He ran under the dining room table and refused to come out for over an hour.  He just wanted to close both eyes and lay.  My husband felt like he checked him out okay and proceeded to clean his mother's house.  So I stop by on the way home from work to find Dublin very lethargic and I knew something had happened to him.  Then I saw his eyes.  I saw both because one has the like second lid all swollen and half closed.  The other he just doesn't want to leave open much either.  I ran to the phone and got a vet appt like within a few minutes.   We got him there and I felt sick over how he was acting.  He was so pathetic looking and so mellow which isn't him.  And he was laying on the vets hard floor.  Something he never has done before either.   His eye is draining slightly also.  Anyway vet said he can see fine and that his pupils are fine.  That he probably has never had a bad injury before and he is a baby about it.  Watch him for 24 hours etc and come right back if he isn't improving.  He is just pathetic!  He never just sleeps.  And that is all he wants to do.  And his SAD SACK eyes are too much.  He is eating fine (good sign) and drinking water and barking at a passerby on occasion.  He seems to be afraid of my husband now.  Sort of avoiding him.  I am worried he won't like playing with his Chuck It anymore or his balls.  This really shook him up.  What should I watch for?  What can I do to get his fear level right again?

Oh no! Poor Dublin. Lillie said she will be right over to kiss his boo boo. Can you tell I have a 2 year old?

Hopefully he'll forget all about the ball hurting him after he's all better and full of energy. I dont know nothing about playing with balls and dogs. Mine wont play with me. They just want to go for walks or out running beside the bike.

Anyways tell Dublin to get better quick and get back out there chasing that ball. Just tell him to watch it when dad throws the hard balls.

Update...he had to go back to the vet tonight.  He just isn't doing well.  He nods off to sleep quickly in the middle of acting normal.  Then he perks up and his eyes are open again and again later he just walks off with his eyes closed and lays down anywhere.  They check for scratched cornea and it came back normal.  His pupils are normal also.  But his second or/and third eyelids are half closed on the injured eye and sort of droopy on the normal eye.  He has some tearing and drainage from the hurt eye also.  They are going with the theory that he is in pain and is bruised and want to wait till Monday to reevaluate him.  They gave him Rimadyl.  And no dog park just resting.  This should be fun!  I am so concerned and doesn't anyone here know much about a hard blow to a dogs head?  What should I watching for and will he be okay?

I don't have experience with a blow to a dog's head, but in a person you would watch for disorientation (stumbling, dizziness, confusion), vomiting, and headaches. So sorry; I hope he feels much better tomorrow. {{{hugs}}}.

Poor Doblin! The fact that you said he'll fall asleep in the middle of normal activity worries me. Did you tell the vet that? It could also be that if just scared him so badly that it wore him out I hope thats all it is. Keep us updated.
