    puppys at petstores

Do petstores not sell Pitbulls, bull terriers, GSDs, and dobermans at petstores, or is it just where I live? I'm not planning on buying one from the petstore...just curious

I just think the types of dogs people that would be going into a pet store would want would be different than the breeds you mentioned.  So, they don't carry them because they wouldn't sell.

It could very well have to do with where you live. Shadow was bought by friends in a pet store in Plano. The breeder's name is on the purchase papers but I haven't been able to locate him. He is not on any breeder list I have searched so far and he's not on the stop puppy mills list, either. More than likely, a bubba with a box o' pups. Then again, around here, you can find people selling dogs at parking lots, on the side of the road. A popular spot in Sherman is the Home Depot parking lot. In McKinney/Prosper area, Hwy 380 and fm 1461. In Denton, Loop 288 and I-35, across from the Golden Triangle Mall.

As for why a store would not sell the big, strong breeds in your area, I wouldn't know about that, though.

Please DO NOT buy a pet from a pet store. Pet stores are known for buying dogs from (Puppy Mills). Find a breeder with a good reputation.  or Please go to the animinal shelter or a dog support group. Millions of Great Dogs who need homes are put down because people buy from puppy mills or pet stores!!! Please be a responsable owner. I have owned many Shelter Dogs and I Love them...

I have only been in a few pet stores that sell puppies - ever - but about a year ago looking for a food for B I went in to one in an affluent strip mall.  They only had the toy breeds and some designer dogs.  They were on display in what appeared to be fishtanks.  I got so nauseous I left.  I get nauseous every time I think of it.

I honestly don't konw what anyone is thinking - the store owner, the workers, the people that shop there and the person who would buy a tiny mutt for $1500 from a fish tank

Sorry it really freaked me out.  My guess is that only the smaller breeds and super duper popular ones would be in pet stores.

I agree. I think a lot of those dogs come from puppy mills. After seeing Oprah's show, how could anyone buy from a pet store!

They ask so little and give so much!

People, read her post. She says she isn't planning on buying a pet store puppy!

I have seen a bull terrier at our mall's pet store. I may have seen a dobe. APBT and Amstaffs - nope. The store near us tends to favor medium to small dogs, with a golden or lab thrown in. Never seen a GSD, either.

I saw an Akita puppy just the other day at the mall pet store.  Was kind of surprised.

Zoe - 3 year old chocolate and tan miniature dachshund

Zack - 8 month old toy manchester terrier

Ally - 9 year old black and white domestic shorthair cat

    Re: puppys at petstores

I would imagine that pet stores would tend to avoid larger breeds because they grow so quickly and take up more space.  Also, the tiny designer breeds do tend to be more popular and bring in the big bucks.

Puppy stores make me sick.  I just gave a presentation tonight in my NonProfits class about the link between puppy stores and puppy mills.  Alot of the kids in class had no idea, I hope I turned them away from puppy stores.  Another group was highlighting the ASPCA so I hope their presentation turned them towards rescue dogs.

The biggest I saw was a mastiff. Confused  but only one and the rest in that store were smaller breeds or mutts.

I thought that petstore had gone out of business, but apparently just the franchise did.  The guy that ran the franchise has opened back up as his own store and is still selling puppies.  Sad

ours seem to focus on weird mixes with strange names. Although I did see a St. Bernard in one once. Watched in disbelief as some lady paid $3K for a border collie/ aussie mix. Bet that ended well.

OMG, that really makes me feel sick to my stomach. She probably knew absolutely nothing about either breed.

I can't even go in the stores that sell puppies. I feel way to bad for them all. I went in a store one time to buy some supplies for my pond and when I went in it was stacked with kennels stuffed with little puppies. I just left, I didn't want to give those people any money. Not like it makes a diference to them anyway, but those places are really upsetting.

    Re: puppys at petstores

Why is it in this great nation of ours that Puppy Mills can't be shut down ?  I was very surprised to find out that in Pennsylvania the Amish are a big problem. They sell whole litters to brokers , who in turn supply the pet stores.

And the AKC turns a blind eye to this. Still letting the operations  provide paperwork for the dogs.

Then the poor dogs are in Pet Store windows begging for a home... not their fault at all.   MANS.  So if you don't buy that Pet Store dog what's going to happen to it?  So very sad. Catch 22.

Until the AKC stops issuing papers for these Puppy Mill dogs this will continue. IMO

The Pit Bulls , GSD, and Dobbies, may be too much of a liability to the store owners if something goes wrong. Law suits.
