Need some help on new commands??

  Need some help on new commands?? Reply Contact  I need a few new commands: stand up ( and a tip to train it?) head up - I need something that means he needs to keep his head up while walking ( he's an intense sniffer) that's all I can remember right now - senior moment can't remember the other one   "I think Karen should get a BC next time because she deserves a more mellow laid back dog! Or a Maremma because she needs a more clingy, biddable, easily trained dog." Brookcove 2008

Reply Contact  those sound like pretty easy things to teach! i taught Zoey to stand by simply putting her in a down, then holding a treat just in front and above where she could get it, and when she stood i click/treat. then start moving it back farther so she stands up quicker, put in a hand movement or a word for it, and there you go! i'm sure someone else can do a better job at explaining it haha as for looking up to avoid sniffing? i'd teach a "leave it" or "watch" so when you say it he looks up at you. Zoey's a sniffer when we go for walks, and that's fine kuz she's exploring and having fun, but if she heads towards something i don't want her getting into i use a leave it. i also use it when she's chasing my cats, or thinking about it...   Good luck! those seem like pretty simple things to teach, i'm sure you guys will have it in no time :)  My dog makes me a better person.

Zoey's a sniffer when we go for walks, and that's fine kuz she's exploring and having fun, but if she heads towards something i don't want her getting into i use a leave it. i also use it when she's chasing my cats, or thinking about it...   Now this one isn't easy.  We have a great 'leave it', and 'enough' is for when he has sniffed enough.  Bugsy is pretty much a nose with legs.  My problem is that if I take him to somewhere new and full of smells you physically cannot keep his head up (remember he is large and powerful).  This has been a problem in a class we are taking in which we do some work outside in a dog yard and he is suppose to not sniff. What I want to do is have a 'formal' head up walk.  Somehow different than a normal walk.  "I think Karen should get a BC next time because she deserves a more mellow laid back dog! Reply Contact  Does he have a watch me when not walking?  If not teach that (there's lots of instructions online).  Then start using it while walking around the house (boring, no temptation to sniff), then outside in the yard where the smells are familiar, then gradually in more and more exciting places.  If he doesn't get it in a new place, back up a step, don't try to "force" him to be right in the harder environment.
