    Quick question about training

I was wondering how long I should work on a command with Aisha before moving onto something else? (Right now we are working on sit w/ distractions)

My other question is, Aisha never barks unless she is playing with the beachball or another dog. Is it okay to let her bark in those circumstances or should I try to put a stop to it?

    Thanks a bunch Smile

    Re: Quick question about training

I would wait until it looks like she's getting it and then move onto something else and come back to the other thing.

With the barking, I'd say it's ok to let her bark if shes playing. If you reprimand her for barking when she's playing she's probably going to think she's getting in trouble for playing.

    Hope I helped :)

    Re: Quick question about training

I work on various commands all of the time. The training never stops. So one session I'll work on sit/stay, another session it'll be down. Another session will be touch and so on.

The barking thing - that's up to you. To stop the barking, stop the play as soon as the dog starts barking like a maniac. It's a tough thing to break though since they tend to get over excited over certain things and all training will go out the window.

    Re: Quick question about training

    Thanks everyone Smile

I was just a little worried about overwhelming her or causing any confusion. It's not too bad she is kinda getting the hang of "sit" but its definitely still a work in progress. However she will automatically sit when its time to eat and she won't touch it until I tell her to take it...but thats the only time she does that.

It doesn't bother me when she barks while she is playing, I was just concerned it might become a habit. But she has never barked at any humans yet or any new people. So I guess its okay, shes just having fun.

Also I was wondering if anyone could suggest any basic obedience books. I want to teach her how to lay, stay, leave it (she really isn't understanding this one and I wonder if I'm doing something wrong), speak/ quiet, and all that but I remember I had a magazine a long time ago that kind of broke down how to teach them properly. But I've lost it and my memory on how to do certain things. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks! Smile

    Re: Quick question about training

I have zero restrictions on the time between teaching/working on commands.  It isn't odd for me to introduce several new and different behaviors in one 10-15 min session.  Not only does Kirby not seem to get confused but it actually improves his learning process by keeping his little wheels turning and him focused.  It also keeps him from becoming bored if I'm working on strengthening something he already knows or frustrated if he can't figure out what I'm looking for.  One of the things I love about the clicker is it makes it real easy for me to jump from one behavior to the next.

As for the barking I would say it depends if it bothers you or not.  If it is something you dislike than you might want to work on it.  The beach ball sounds like it would be a great opportunity to teach the command quiet to her if she doesn't already know it.
