    Okay, Here are the symptoms....?

So let's play Guess the Illness ??  Dog coughs , not all the time...just once in a while. When the dog coughs it sounds as if they are trying to throw up. There is some straining and the huge almost wrenching explusion of what sounds like very phemey air. Another quick one and another.. you alert on the first then get up on the second thinking they either have or are trying very hard to throw up... it get's "wetter" in sound until you think back to the last time you threw up hard and could barely catch your breath while nearly aspirating. For all the noise absoultely zero comes out.

There is no temp, stools are great, no umexpected weight loss and appetite is unchanged. Dog may be a tad lethargic but since it is also a hound it is tough to say. I find myself worried over Megasophagus etc.

Here is the ironic note.... one other dog does this. First dog is nearly 13, second dog is 8.5 years old.

    Any Ideas???

I posted several months back about my older dog, Buffy, doing the same thing. Like you, I did worry about it being Megasophagus but somehow, I just didn't think so. Not long after I posted, it stopped, so now I think it was possibly allergies. I hope it's something relatively simple for you too, but I know how disturbing it can be.

Kenya does this once every few weeks, and if she does it long enough, a wad of hair comes out.  I liken it to cats hacking up a hairball.  She starts coughing/hacking, straining really hard, and it turns to a wet gagging sound like she's trying to barf but never does.  Sometimes nothing comes out, other times she keeps doing it until some phlegm and hair comes out.  When she starts doing it, I feed her something slippery, like a dollop of yogurt mixed with a raw egg.  That seems to get the hair back down so it goes through the other end!

Did both dogs start it about the same time?

Have you had them heartworm tested?  It's honestly most likely dust or yuck they inhaled ... but ... if it goes on, have them checked.
