    neutering small breeds

I am aware of some of the issues regarding early neutering and bone development in large breeds, but what about small dogs (like 8-9 lbs at maturity)? The breeder suggested I should wait a year before neutering Zack because of his small size and risks with the anesthesia.  I'm a little hesitant to wait that long though because I am afraid of marking behaviors developing.  Zoe was spayed at 6 months and she was only 5 lbs and turned out fine.  Also, only one of his testicles is descended.  Is it dangerous to wait that long in that case?

Zoe - 3 year old chocolate and tan miniature dachshund

Zack - 8 month old toy manchester terrier

Ally - 9 year old black and white domestic shorthair cat

My grandmother always had small dogs. Regardless of the sex she had them spayed/neutered at exactly 6 months old. She only lost one little dog on the surgery table but it was due to an unseen health problem. So I would just ask you vet what they think and go from there.

It's not just bone/growth problems that are avoided by early neutering,it also IMHO affects their personalities, coats and such. Your taking away the pups hormones..How are they supposed to mentally mature as well as physical? I have read about dogs remaining eternal puppies when done too early. I have also seen dogs who retained their fluffy wool puppy coats because their adult coats never grew in,this has also been said to be a side affect of early neutering, but mostly only affect coated breeds i suppose.

I've known plenty of neutered dogs who still mark, regardless of age when done, most often than not it is a behavioral problem that requires training.

As long as you have an experienced surgeon, get pre-op bloodwork, and use both gas anesthesia and a heart monitor, I wouldn't worry too much about neutering at 6 months.  Experience allows the vet to operate more quickly.  The bloodwork would catch kidney/liver problems.  The gas anesthesia allows the dog to be sedated as little as possible.

When you ask about experience, be specific.  How many dogs under 5 lbs have you neutered?  Complication rate?  Fatality rate?

Waiting until one year shouldn't be a problem with the testicles.  The undescended testicle might still come down.

As long as an undescended testicle is removed by age 2, I wouldn't worry about it.  Cancer there can usually be removed cleanly.

However, you are right to be concerned about an undescended testicle.  My sister lost a sheltie at 6-years-old due to that problem.  The rescue she had gotten the dog (age 2) from had assumed the dog was neutered.  Imagine the shock of the vet who did exploratory surgery and discovered the "mass" was the testicles.  Unfortunately the dog's tumor had destroyed his immune system and he was unable to recover from the surgery.
