I had a friend compete a few years back at SRS in TX. She was trying to get into the ESPN Great Outdoor Games that was the year they decided to stop that.

I have watched it on TV. I love to watch the retreivers work, that is why I am thinking I might want to do some retreiver training with Teddi. Of course I love the dock jumping too.

I love watching it on TV and enjoyed this last year.  I probably mentioned before that I wish Bugsy could do dock diving he can absolutely fly.  But he wouldn't jump into water to save his soul Sad

That's ok it is not for everyone. My Belle is a HUGE jumper, but won't do it in competition for love nor money. Her personal best off a dock was at her second competition, she went 17'11" and she NEVER ran on the dock. Up north she breaks the 20+ mark easily and she loves to run and jump.

Would Bugsy do it if other dogs were? That works for some but not for others.

We have never picked out a dog thinking "oh we need one to jump big". However we did pick out Teddi wanting high drive and high energy. We figured they would be an attribute to the dock sport and also for agility. She loves both sports. She loves doing anything that she gets to think in AND have fun and run around.

My vet friend thinks Belle was the pup that her litter mates would pick on. So when she is put on the spot she shuts down. I wish I could get into her head. She is such a good dog when this happens to her you just don't know what to do.

Poor Belle!  That is some good jumping, wouldn't you like her to talk and tell you why she shuts down.

Nah.  He won't even swim most of the time.  The only time he really got into swimming was at a local lake on a hot day after we'd hiked 5 miles.  We came across a big male choc lab and they hit it off.  Sammy would chase after the stick and eventually Bugsy got into it.  He gave Sammy a run for his stick so to speak. His girlfriend GR in sig is an avid swimmer but he is her leader.  They have a game where we throw something into the lake and she swims to get it.  He waits in water up to his chin and takes it from her when she reaches him.  Then they have a big chase on land and it starts again.

When we had friends and their lab back in Nov. Their lab was loving the lake and Bugsy wouldn't swim with him either.  He loves the water, rivers especially, but he won't even lay down in his wading pool Tongue Tied  Drives me nuts.  One of the reasons I wanted a dog was to play in the water with them, I've always had labs and didn't even know dogs didn't swim. Geeked

I hope that Teddi gets past her problems and can do some dock diving.  I mean I can't tell you how much I love it!  The dog I had as a kid wouldn't have been able to attend a water event as a spectator LOL  She used to jump into our 4ft above ground pool all the time - despite it being against the rules

Ah well - my week is looking busy but I will definitely be trying to find some time to go to this event with the Bugs.  Last year we saw a couple of labs with a redneck owner.  Well most dogs are quite submissive to Bugs and these were no different.  They both laid down belly up and the owner started shouting at them, "don't you lie down for now dog!"  He was further incensed when he saw that Bugsy was neutered.  LOL.  I felt bad for his 2 sweeties Sad
