  is he marking? Reply Contact So my five month old pup  has learned that when he goes outside he is to go to the bathroom, which he does immediately.  However, he has peed in the house several times and in strange places just an hour or so after peeing outside.  For example, he walked into Zoe's crate and peed on her bedding.  Then, right after Zoe was playing with one of his favorite toys, he peed right on the toy.  Is he marking? Or are they just potty accidents in weird places?  He is not lifting his leg, he is squatting.   Re: is he marking? Reply Contact Puppies like to potty on soft, absorbant surfaces, so I would say that's what he is doing, however, I have never had a male pup around that age. Casey was close to 11 months when I got him, and my other fosters leave around 3.5 months at the latest. I can understand going in the crate, it's not his, so he doesn't have to keep it clean.... but the toy is strange.... was it a big toy?

Reply Contact The toy is a 6-inch stuffed yellow duck.  The breeder gave me the duck when I picked up Zack because he loved to play with it.  I am wondering if he is just confused because the breeder paper-trained him and he is peeing on whatever else is available in the house since I don't have papers down. Reply Contact maybe it's just me, but it SEEMS a bit early on for marking. have you noticed marking behaviour outside? cause the situations sound like it could be marking, and marking doesnt always mean, they need to lift a leg. jason squats often to mark, if the situation calls for it (a spon on the ground as opposed to a tree or a bush)... hmm, maybe just take him out more often to see if that helps... He's not house trained. If I were you, I would start at the beginning and use a crate to house train him. This is THE reason I don't like paper training. It's confusing unless he's always going to have papers.   I seriously doubt it's marking.     I have come to this conclusion as well.  I have to get the whole idea of being allowed to pee in the house on objects (papers, crate pads, stuffed toys) out of his head.  I don't think I will ever use papers again.  I think it was the whole reason it took over a year to get Zoe housetrained.
