    Re: Its Flea Season

I would not get Frontline (or Frontline Plus) off of eBay.  There is too much chance of getting a counterfeit that is either toxic or useless.

Our forum sponsor (http://www.Dog.com) carries Frontline as does http://www.DrsFosterSmith.com and many other online suppliers.

http://www.DrsFosterSmith.com also carries Interceptor - the heartworm "preventative" that I consider best (least toxic, very reliable, out of the dog's system within 48 hours).  Interceptor also kills most intestinal worms (but not tapeworms).

NOTE:  Heartworm "preventatives" require a prescription.  The term "preventative" is used here to designate a product that kills young heartworms before they develop into adults.  Once a young heartworm is past a certain stage of development a "preventative" will not kill it.  That makes it very important not to miss a dose.

The term heartworm "treatment" is used to describe the harsh chemicals that are required to kill adult heartworms.

I have no idea where to get decent stuff for my dogs.  I've been using Hartz but it's really greasy so I'm searching for an alternative, preferably something they can eat.

I tried that website that Betty White does for cheaper pet meds that are mailed to you but I seriously don't have enough money to buy it in bulk

Aside from vets and online stores; your local feed store should carry Frontline products.  Maybe not all, but some will...call around.

Unfortunately those product aren't "affordable" anywhere IMO.  If you ask me they're to expensive but they work and they know we need it.  The good thing about Frontline is the package has multiple doses in it so your really buy 3 or 6 months supply at once.  You will invest now and not have to for awhile.  PS:  There all a little greasy until they dry.

I use Frontline Spray -- get it from the vet.  it's about $35 for a bottle, but it lasts  a LONG time (like a year or two) -- it says one spray per pound but I use half that or so.

Just an FYI -- many, many pets have had severe reactions to Hartz products.  I would switch to something else asap.

    Re: Its Flea Season

We've had an outbreak here too.  I don't like to apply the stuff until I absolutely have to - except Ben, who is severly allergic to fleas (of course!).  so generally I have to go through some remedial activities to combat an established population.

For the first time year, Frontline hasn't worked for us.  I ahve friends who have had trouble with Frontline-resistant fleas for a couple years, but this is the first I've seen it.

I ahve gone to other methods - I've used icky chemicals (Nylar) to knock down the egg and larval population, and I'll be switching to a combo of diatomaceous earth and Program to keep the fleas at bay for the rest of the year.

If you are concerned about the Hartz-type spot ons causing a reaction, be aware that K9 Advantix uses the same ingredient in their product (permethrin).  But it's cats that have the worst (and lethal) problem with this ingredient.  You cannot use permethrin around cats in any form.  I hae a product that is labeled for cattle, that I use, that is cat safe as it is not even in the pyrethroid class.  I don't use it on my cat, but I have confidence allowing my cat to wrestle with his canine buddies, with something completely different from that dangerous class of drugs.

If I had a, er, normal lifestyle, I'm sure I could control fleas with DE and Program and dusting the yard with Sevin.  I did last year, since it wasn't a bad year for fleas.

Its so interesting to me that you say this...Frontline, which I've used for years, isn't working for us now!

Yeah, I have a friend who is a biochemist, and he confirmed that there are definitely documented cases of flea populations that have adapted to fipronil.  Although it is a fairly new product in its application in household flea control, it's been around forever as a control for crickets on golf courses, which also exposes fleas at a level which does not eliminate entire populations.

I tried K9 Advantix last year and Jessie had a weird reaction; for about a week after it was applied, she would grimace and have muscle spasms on her back or shoulders if I stroked that area. I tried it again four weeks later and the same thing happened, so I stopped using it.
