    Prey Drive(sort of Graphic)

B caught and killed a bunny tonight. Mercifully, it happened quickly. There was nothing I could of done to prevent it or change the outcome. I let him out the back door and he became a predator in under 30 seconds. It was very surreal. The whole kind of dance of life and death. When I was finally able to get the bunny away from him, he was so charged up and excited. I guess I've never seen that behaviour (other than on Animal Planet) in my backyard, so it was a little unnerving. I felt really bad for the bunny, but at the same time I have a whole different view of my dog who is now sleeping peacefully on the sofa.

I can definitely see where you're coming from, but then again, I work my dog in Schutzhund, so I actually try to build this kind of drive.  I know so many people who would never think of their dog as being a prey-driven animal, but that's what they are at heart.  Some obviously are more so than others, but I think every dog has some prey drive.  I love it when people I know see their dogs swinging the toys around and pouncing on them, etc., and they think its so cute, but then are horrified when the dog goes after a cat or some other small animal.  I guess I've always looked at dogs and seen them as a predator, but I know so many people who really don't see them like this at all.  Don't let it get you down, and don't let it make you start thinking of your dog as a cold-hearted killing machine.  He's just doing what's in his genes to do.

You are so right. If dogs and man somewhere along the line hadn't decided to co-habitate, dogs would still be allowed to be exactly what they where designed to be. In many cases I think we've domesticated them so much so that we forget. I think thats why I was so shocked yesterday. You know, I do think its cute and funny when he engages me with stealing my socks, towels, etc. and swings them around. I just never really saw it other than play. It probably could also be considered practice. Re-reading my post, I didn't mean to imply that my feelings for B were diminshed in anyway. In a wierd way I have a much greater appreciation of him; his dual nature - both domestic and still very much a part of nature.

I felt the same way after seeing mine eat a mouse at the dog park.  He had a look in his eyes that said I dare you to take this away from me.  It was gross!

Shadow has killed mice, squirrels and some dove chicks, though it was mainly from playing too hard. But that doesn't negate the fact that it came from prey drive.
