However, there is no evidence that Iran is currently developing nuclear weapons or that it would use them for offensive purposes, especially when that would be suicidal.

Agreed . A few crazy terrorists may be willing to bomb a country, because they don't care if they die. But considering how we leveled Iraq.....why on earth would Iran attack us? They KNOW they would just get levelled in reponse.  An entire government/country is not going to uselessly destroy itself just to try to make a statement.

the president of iran is a terrorist. or are you all not old enough to remember 1979?

he and several of his fellow countrymen held US diplomats hostage for a little over a year. of course, they were obviously scared of what ronald reagan may do to iran, so they released the hostages before his inauguration.

I had a very long reply typed out (full of links) that got lost in cyberspace.  I'm too lazy to re-create it, so will summarize.

Iran's current president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was a 23-year old college student when the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis occurred.  I seriously doubt that he had a thing to do with it.

The post of president of Iran is largely a figurehead position.  The president has little to no real power.  Iran is ruled lock, stock and barrel by a Supreme Leader, who is the highest ranking religious and political figure in Iran.

It was the Ayatollah Khomeini who masterminded the 1979 hostage crisis.

Is Ahmadinejad a nut job?  Based on the preponderance of the evidence, at least from our (U.S.) perspective, he certainly appears to be.  But since his is a mostly powerless position, I'm not sure that all of his talk amounts to even a small hill of beans.

are you naive enough to think a 23 yr old could not have participated in this crime?

from what i have read, there is some controversy over whether it was him or not. everyone seems to say he was there, but he denies it.

i never said he masterminded the terrorist attack, i said he was part of it.

I don't really know the facts to this matter but the only fact I do know is those "people" are messed up in the head. I would have no problem dumping nukes on them like we did to Japan in WWII. I'm sick of their fighting/wars/terrorism/and whatever else they've got going on. Thier religious ways & minds are nothing but destructive.

Which "people"?  Iranian people?    You advocate the mass killing of Iranian people (because that is the result of dropping nuclear bombs on Iran) even though you yourself admit that you don't really know the facts?   You cannot drop nuclear bombs on people because you don't like their religious practices or politics.    I think that is pretty messed up.  You might want to read some testimonies from survivors in Japan and ask yourself if that's a way you want to treat people, people who have absolutely nothing to do with political leaders, just everyday people trying to live their lives, if there is EVER a justifiable reason to deliberately promote or participate in such horrifying mass murder aside from absolute, last-choice defense.   That could be you, your partner, your parents, your best friends.

And, Myra, thanks for your posts. They're great.

This post literally makes me nauseous. Oh. My. God. I can't believe there are actually people like this in the world. Not only people, but 21 year olds.

    I'm almost speechless...

"If Obamas campaigning for Odinga in 2006 , in Kenya is any indication, its pretty extreme. Last week Odingas boys were burning , raping and murdering Christian Kikuyi in Nairobi and elsewhere, and Obama is on their short list. He calls Odinga frequently to give "advice." So things don't look good for Obama, nor for America under Obama, who associates with fascists in Kenya"

that's what my R.M. just said to me... McCains going to win. We were talking about the statistics today too and currently McCain has 63% or something like that???

I'm not sure what your point is here?

Edit:  From the reports I have read, Obama called twice during the campaigning to express concern over the situation and calling on Odinga to end the violence (through peaceful negotiation)  which is quite different from how you have framed it.  I'm not sure what Obama's relationship with his cousin has to do with you advocating a nuclear attack on Iran because you think they're "messed up".   here's a far more reliable source:

I have read this thread with interest and have very much tried to stay out of things.  I must, however, point out that any website that advertises Confederate flags should not in any way be considered a news source that even tries to be objective.  The Confederate flag does not scream "AMERICAN" to me.  I particularly enjoy how the authors make it a point to spell out his middle name, knowing that many will associate that name with "Middle Eastern Terrorist."  Further, anybody who views this website as a source of objective news should not be looked to as any sort of authority on political or social matters.

And, for the record - I am not necessarily a liberal.

WHOA! You know whenever I hear "those people" my brains kinda freaks out a bit. Are you trying to say "extremists who want to wipe out every other culture, religion and people"??? I hope so, because if by "those people" you mean all Iranians or all Middle Easterners, then that's pretty "destructive," don't ya think?

Personally I think your comment "I would have no problem dumping nukes on them like we did to Japan in WW II"  is callous and shows a disregard for innocent civilians who die and the service members who have to do the killing.

How much do you know about what happened before the bombs were dropped on Japan?  Do you have any idea of the casualty numbers for American and Japanese soldiers in the South Pacific? Did you know that the Japanese Premier had said (only two months before) that the Japanese would fight to the death rather than surrender?

My point: the decision to bomb Japan was made in order to end the war as quickly as possible and to prevent horrendous casualties--FOR BOTH SIDES.  One bomb was dropped on August 6 and the next was dropped on August 9----the Japanese were given an opportunity to surrender. BTW Because of the bombs, Japan suffered only a fraction of the casualties that Germany did.

AngryIMHO,You don't drop a nuclear bomb because you're "sick" of the way a group of people behave---you do it when you feel that the great horror of killing so many people will be greatly outweighed by the number of people saved.

The difference between the almost right word & the right word is really a large matter--it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.
