    Support a Cause?

Do any of you support a cause other than dog related?

Current I am a big supporter of Cancer research and technologies. If I have any money to spare I'm sure to always donate some!

My Mother is charge of Turtle and Rescue patrol for SW Florida on the island & locally as well

    What Cause do YOU Support???

    Re: Support a Cause?

I support the Caledon Animal Shelter, I donate money and food and blankets.  I also support the Breast Cancer Society, that is a major part of my donations, my nona (grandmother) had breast cancer a few years ago, had the operation and all.  I am extremely close to my nona, she practically raised me, and that was such a difficult time.  I also donate to the Canadian Cancer Society

hehe, I guess you could say BF and I also save the turtles!  Just on a smaller scale, he has a pond at the front of his property, right by the road, his road has crazy drivers going up and down it (a straight, semi hilly country road) and whenever BF and I see any turtles at any house up his road, we stop, I get out and stand in the road beside the turtles (I figure, no one will hit me when they see me) and BF carries the turtle back across the road lol.

    Re: Support a Cause?

My best friend’s sister has MS and my boss is heavily involved in raising money for MS so I support them in several ways.

My husband and I do pet therapy with all of our dogs. So altho it’s "pet-related" we donate a LOT of our time and effort for Give Kids the World, Grandma’s House (a home for developmentally disabled children) and several area nursing homes and alzheimer’s facilities. This past Saturday we celebrated our fifth anniversary of volunteering with Give Kids the World and we’d both donate more time if we possibly could. It is, without doubt, our favorite place to give of ourselves, our dogs and our time and money.

    Re: Support a Cause?

Heifer Project International (www.heifer.org) - they donate livestock (and the training to go with it) to people who live in poverty worldwide.  When the animal reproduces, the first offspring is passed along to another person in their community to expand the gift from just one family to the whole community.  They teach sustainable farming methods and help women in the communities as well.  The whole "teach a man to fish" idea I guess.

I'm donating money to Heifer Project in lieu of favors at my wedding in May. :)

     Planned Parenthood

That just made me think... know what would be a good idea? For me to help educate young teens/adults locally about safe sex (since I have an extremely powerful personal experience story)

How can you get involved with that type of stuff???

    Re: Support a Cause?

If you want to get involved in Planned Parenthood's public education programs, contact your local Planned Parenthood office and ask about volunteer opportunities.   I don't know how close you are to Boston, but the Boston Women's Health Collective is an amazing organization and I know that they take volunteers for some programs so you can look into them as well.   Many women's organizations (including university women's centres) and LGBT centres offer sex education programs as part of public outreach or within their larger programs (youth drop-ins for street-involved youth, for example, often have a safer sex education and supply component).

    Re: Support a Cause?

I support my local Babies Best Start. It's a program for pregnant teenagers to safely go and learn about nutrition, pregnancy, birth, newborns, the works. After you have the baby they have a Mom's group you can attend to learn about children of all ages.  And they also donate baby clothes/ items/ free milk & OJ while you are pregnant/ breastfeeding and they give you alot of informational books to keep about what to expect during your pregnancy and after. This place is very near and dear to my heart. So me and DH donate baby/ toddler clothes and money to them monthly. Smile

Local church, which supports numerous charities.

Albuquerque Rescue Mission (feeds and helps the homeless) and the plight of the homeless has always been something on my mind

Save Darfur (stop the genocide) This has been something that is special to me since the tragedy in Rwanda, I doubt I will ever forget the pictures broadcast around the world after the genocide there. I read the book by the Canadian General who was posted there, and that touched my heart. Also the book on child soldiers and books about the lost boys of the sudan.

    Re: Support a Cause?

I've been reluctant to donate much to the cause I really care about(autism), because I do not agree with the views of the majority of large organizations out there. The only significant amount of money I ever donated was from the sale of a laptop on ebay to a local school for children with autism. I happened to know the boy whose family started the school and organization, and knew my money would not be supporting something I had a major disagreement with.

My donations, time, effort, etc., will now be going to a new foundation, started by the parents of a student I work with. Actually, being that I don't really have much in the way of money, it'll be more like my time and efforts. I'm in the very beginning stages right now of organizing a 5k race. I called a guy who does race timing and promoting. My dad runs in a lot of races, and said this was the guy to call. So, I got the info about what our first steps in organizing this should be, and I'll probably be calling potential sites later this week.

    Re: Support a Cause?

We donate to our local arts counsel and free medical clinic,  I support the food pantry where I work with monthly money for toiletries which can not be done with food pantry money... We donate to Red Cross for disaster relief.  I support the Free Wheel Chair Mission and this year we added the Ocean Conservancy.  (we try to cover the local, national and international options)
