O you will love it.  Now you can join the wonderful world of lusting after different lens and flash systems.  Btw,  I would suggest that one of your first upgrades be a good flash unit.  You want one that you can adjust the flash angle and bounce it off a reflecting card.

ditto all of that! the camera body is just the beginning...the lenses are the real fun! I'm a Canon girl myself, but you bought yourself a good camera, and can't wait to see some good pics with it!

It is a capable camera, there is no question about that.  The only problem I have with it is the limited number and high price of lenses that will auto focus on that body.

Huh??  A search on B&H shows 135 different lenses that they have available for the Nikon auto focus also from the manufacturers Sigma, Tamron, Tokia both US branded and grey market.  Heck even the older generation of AF NIkkor lenses work with that body and those you can get really cheap.  Now if you want the 2.8 200mm lenses you are going to pay a pretty penny but that is the case with any manufacturer.  Remember the optics and quality of glass really makes or breaks the quality of a camera.

That is great news gina… you will have loads of fun learning!

Although I have had my pentax DSLR fro about 13 months now and have read about 6 different books, have 2 different manuals for it and still don’t understand a fraction of what my camera can do…lol.  For the most part I learn best just by playing around a lot.  I get a TON of really crappy, worthless pics, but every time I do, I learn a little more.

    Enjoy!

But not that will auto focus on the D40x.  Only the AF-S lenses will auto focus on that body.  Why Nikon did this is beyond me.  Sure, they had a price point they were trying to appeal to but, if Canon can do it, surely Nikon can.  The limited auto focus lens selection was the reason I chose Canon XTi over Nikon D40x.

I didn't even notice that.  Thanks for pointing it out.  I guess it was a real price saving pulling the motor and auto-focus electronics out of the body of the D40 and D60.  Considering you can get a body and 18-55 lenses for less than $500 thats a pretty good deal.

Funny that they didn't remove the body focusing motor from the more expensive models like the d80 and up.  I guess these folks would riot if their olders lenses wouldn't work.

Truth be told though I have a couple of the AF-S lenses with the silent wave motor and they really are sweet.  Very fast and crisp focusing.  Much faster than the regular AF lenses.  There is a wide variety of AF-S lenses out there but they are more expensive and considering I have some AF lenses that are 20 years old and still function just fine that wasn't a bad investment.

And really you only need a couple of lenses.  Something in the range of 18-70 and a 70-2/300

I don't blame you.  It is a great camera.  I hope I didn't imply otherwise.  I just can't understand why Nikon handled the auto focus issue like they did on this camera.  The fact that they did is why I and I suppose many others, bought Canon.

I am sure there was some shrewd reason like "diddling"...you know companies like to diddle buyers when they can LOL!

Thanks for the camera chat...good reading!

Oh come on, Steve.  YOU may only need a couple of lenses.  If I thought I would only need a couple of lenses, I may well have bought the Nikon.
