    Sporadic incontinence after being spayed

We have a beautiful, extremely inteligent Lab/Chow mix who we had spayed in May of 2007 after allowing her to have one litter  of 3 adorable pups January 5th 2007.  Breezy is 4 yrs old and I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar problems or could shed some light on this situation we're experiencing. About a month or so after being spayed she started having sporadic bouts of incontinence.  It doesn't appear painful to her -in fact she's usually not aware of it until she's wet, uncomfortable and extremely embarrassed. She was super easily housebroken as a pup and never experienced any loss of control of any type. Our new vet suggested (and we tried) an all natural holistic suppliment which didnt seem to make any difference. However we'd hate to think the only othger option is putting her on hormones (which we were told would probably be for the rest of her life. Does this seem excessive to anyone but me? I've been told that this happens to male dogs occasionally when they're nuetered but noone can tell me the cause or better yet,can it be cured?  I'm not looking to place blame esp. if it was simply something unforeseen which occurred during the spaying I requested; but find it weird that when I first called his office to explain her symptoms and make an appt his office help said they'd check and get back to me. Future calls informed me he was on vacation one week, overbooked for the following three and basically his full practice  didnt allow for the admit of new patients. Thus after assuring me that Breezy's operation was 'normal, nonremarkable and in no way could have attributed to her 'new' problem.   We've since found a wonderful vet who just wants to see Breezy get better. She naturally couldnt say some mistake occured during her being spayed but is baffled as to why this condition occured in our young otherwize super healthy dog.   I realize the length of this topic may have deterred its even being read,  Forgive me for being unable to articulate (my husband says almost any) subject briefly or concisely  but when I happened across this forum I felt it might be the answer to my prayers.  I would be grateful for any feedback' wether its a similar problem,a suggestion, other websites, anything- even remote sounding may prove helpful.        Breezy saved my life.  I have to make hers as comfortable and happy as possible.

this is not really unusual, except for the age,, usually it is with 5year olders that are spayed late..If I read riight you have tried some holistic meds and it didn;t work...after that I stopped reading so am not sure what else you have tried...but I found that allmost 100% of them could be controlled with DES, diethylstilbesterol, which is a natural occuring (although a synthetic is used)  hormone... I fgound after  a few weeks, maybe three of treatmen they could be controlled with maybe one or two pills a month...I had patients on this regeme for years and never ever saw any adverse effects except one when the owners got confused and husband and wife both gave pills...The dog went into a slight heat period but it passed.....don;t know if this will help or not but it is worth a try....cbh-dvm

One of my dogs became incontinent after surgery for bladder stones, and my Vet gave her Proin.  After 2 or 3 weeks I tapered the dose down gradually to see what would happen, and she was fine from then on.  From what I understand, it works to strengthen the muscles involved, and that must have been the nudge she needed.

marty'situation is different, ie due to bladder irritation..the spay incontinance is due to endocrine imbalance...bladder irritation or low grad infection  can be cured by antibiotics and relaxants or even time alone..spay incontinance requires endocrine therapy...

Re: Sporadic incontinence after being spayed

Thank you so much for your prompt reply and advice on Breezy's problem. I was hospitalized myself right after writing hence my own delay in responding.  DES is something I will definately bring up at our vets next visit. You asked what natural things we tried. The only one our Dr. suggested which was a supplement called 'Bladder Ease" I believe. I know it had beet extract and all kinds of plant and other veggie/fruit sounding stuff in it.  Since it didnt seem to work after 6 months or so, we stopped.  The vet originally ran a urine and a  blood test which ruled out obvious things (she said)  She said our next step (other than hormones) involved admitting Breezy to the clinic for admittedly uncomfortable or so it seemed) tests i.e. something where they run dye through her veins and other such things which is something I would only subject my beloved girl to if necessary to save her life. (At least it sounds painful to me)  Perhaps its nothing to them?  Anyway thank you again for your concern  I will let you know how things progress.                    Sincerely  Breezysmom

Re: Sporadic incontinence after being spayed

One of my dogs, Mia, was spayed at 6 months and has had bouts of incontinence since then. She is now 6 years old. Whenever she starts 'leaking', I put her on a course of hormones (one every day, decreasing to 2 a week for about 6 weeks) and it clears her up for another 6 months to a year. So, she's not taking them all the time, but will have to take them for the rest of her life.
