    Hi,

    I am new here Smile

Just wanted to say hi and ask a question.

Does anyone know the doses for Tavist, Chlor-trimeton? My dog has the worst allergies and I am trying something new with her, to see if either of these will help. Also, where can I find them?

If you need anymore info about her, please feel free to ask! Thank you :)

    Re: HI!

I've never heard of either of these - do they have a different supplier/shelf name?

What kind of dog is she? I have found, the best thing for my dog with seasonal allergies - Blue Buffalo food and fish oil/vit e supplements. We don't bathe often, and his blankets get washed very frequently.

Have you tried Benedryl? I've used injectable, as well as oral, on some dogs, and it seems to really help.

    Re: HI!

I'm certainly no expert, but I've never heard of those prescriptions being used on dogs. Have you asked your vet?

In order to give you dosing advice for Benadryl, we'll need your dog's weight. Are they seasonal or food allergies?

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

    Re: HI!

Yes, you can use Tavist (you can literally use almost ANY anthistamine on a dog).  You MUST have the right dose for it.

I've pm'd Janet, Oh Queen of Links.  I know she's got a link for doses for anthistamines and I Just plain could NOT find my Pill Book Guide to Medication for Your Dog and Cat last night Jaime.

Folks, Jaime is a really nice lady I've known for a while.  She has an itchy dog -- she oughta fit right in with lots of us here.  I just couldn't lay my hands on that book last night and I knew someone here would have it.

Tavist is ....clemastine.   Jaime - just watch the dose because it's available in more than one strength over the counter I *think*.

    Re: HI!

My Cherokee has pretty bad allergies too. Tavist works best for her when she's attacking her feet. The dose is 0.025-0.05 per lb, every 12 hours. That makes a normal tablet (1.34 mg) the minimum dose for a 50-55 pound dog.

I used Chlor-trimeton for a few weeks for Cherokee, but didn't get results like Benadryl and Tavist can get with her. Doesn't mean it won't work for your dog, I just don't have much experience with it. Its dose is 0.1 mg/lb every 8 hours, maybe up to 4 mg every 8 hours? I'm not sure on that though..

Here is a chart for antihistamines but I can't guarantee its accuracy and the weights are in kg.
