I need a xanax or something (jewlieee) - good update

I'm in a panic atm. I left both dogs outside after I went home from lunch. I swore that I would NEVER do this for so many reasons. I'm sitting here at work thinking that they are either going to jump over the fence, figure out a way to get out of the gate or something similarly bad. Not to mention that it is 25 degrees out.

The bright side is that both dogs are made for this weather - especially Dakota. Both have double coats and have been out in the cold daily (so this won't be a shock). But I just can't stop worrying.

The reason I left them out is because Dakota is ill AGAIN. We are going to the vets tomorrow a.m. for a recheck on her kidneys. She hasn't been eating much for about 2 weeks and has been losing weight. I finally got her eating about a can of food per day until yesterday when all heck broke loose. I knew I was going to come home to a messy house today but I didn't expect it to be that bad. I almost lost my lunch when I stepped in the house. It is *that* bad. The entire time I was at home (about 45 mins) she was outside going to the bathroom. She didn't seem to want to come back in so I took both dog beds (elevated) and put them in the garage with a bowl of water. That way they can have access to the yard and garage.

Ugh, I'm just in a panic and hope they'll be ok.

I'm sure they'll be fine!!! Don't worry!!!! Can you call a neighbor or someone to check up on them to make you feel better?

I think they'll be OK. Poor Dakota and her tummy issues, I hope they figure out what's wrong.

Re: I need a xanax or something (jewlieee)

I understand .. truly do.  And it's an odd thing but sometimes older dogs actually prefer being OUTside than in when not feeling well.  I always thot it was sort of a 'call of the wild' thing but my holistic vet said simply it is often because the heart isn't functioning at full capacity and being outside literally helps them feel like they are getting more 'air' - more oxygen.

She has access to 'shelter' and won't be lying on cold concrete unless she WANTS to.  She probably felt as bad about the mess as you did ... and she indicated HER choice by telling you she didn't want to come in.

Frankly, you sound to me like an incredibly loving, but worried, dog mom who did the best that she could in giving her dog the best options at hand while ensuring safety as much as possible.

I kinda doubt if Dakota is feeling puny, that either one of them are going to jump the fence to visit the world.  And I'd bet that the other dog will stay to keep Dakota company "Just because".

You can give dogs Kaopectate ... but it sounds to me like maybe she needs some slippery elm, but the vet will do a fecal and will likely give you whatever is needed.

It's a difficult time of year for the elderly, truly is.  I'd imagine part of her worry was the fact that she WAS making a mess for you.  On a lot of levels I'm sure she appreciates what you've done.

Callie said it better than I could, but I just wanted to add that I really hope that the vet can give you some answers and some help for Dakota tomorrow.

Thank all. I think that you're right Callie. She stresses out when she makes a mess in the house. She has always been a very clean dog. Either way I'm giving myself a headache!

Where would I find slippery elm and how much would i give her?

She's a husky and she likes being out.  Just think....if you were home, would she want to be out and you'd let her out?  Yup!  Mine...well, one would run away and the other would whine to come inside because she freaks out if she's not within 5 feet of me.

I hope they can find out what is wrong with her.

They'll be ok. They know where home is! Kale used to be a nightmare and could jump or scale anything.. Maven is so small still that I worry about her slipping thru somewhere... BUT they've been home every time we get home... Thank God!

I went home and checked on them and Dakota is calmly laying on her bed in the garage. She seems very content there. Neiko on the other hand, was standing at the back door to the house looking in like "why am I out here?" Hopefully he wasn't barking the entire time.

When I left, I tried to put Neiko inside and leave Dakota out but she wanted him with her. So I gave them both kongs (she wasn't interested in hers) and left. While I was leaving Neiko was looking worried. Hopefully he won't try to escape in his panic.

P.S. I called the vet and am going to take her in tonight instead of waiting until tomorrow.

Glad you could get an earlier appt.  Hopefully the vet can give Dakota something to help.  Sending lots of good vibes your way.

Take a look at Mary Straus's write-up on diarrhea and gastrointestinal disorders:
    http://www.dogaware.com/specific.html#diarrhea

Here is Dr. Pitcairn's recipe for using slippery elm bark for diarrhea, from his book, Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats:

Thoroughly mix 1 slightly rounded teaspoon of slippery elm powder with 1 cup of cold water. Bring to a boil while stirring constantly. Then turn the heat down to simmer and continue to stir for another 2 to 3 minutes while the mixture thickens slightly. Remove from the heat, add 1 tablespoon of honey (for dogs only -- cats don't like sweets, so leave it out), and stir well. Cool to room temperature and give 1/2 to 1 teaspoon to cats and small dogs (under 20 lbs), 2 teaspoons to 2 tablespoons for medium dogs (20 - 40 lbs), and 3 to 4 tablespoons for large dogs (over 40lbs). Give this dose 4 times a day, or about every 4 hours. Cover the mixture and store at room temperature. It will keep for a couple of days.

You should be able find slippery elm in a health food store.

Re: I need a xanax or something (jewlieee) - update

We did a full blood panel and an xray and low and behold - everything is normal! Even her elevated kidney levels are back to normal. I just don't know what is up with this dog. She still refuses to eat and is losing weight, the vet and I are both concerned about that but we couldn't find anything that would cause this ongoing issue. The vet suggested an ultra sound or an intestional biopsy. I just don't know what either of those will show us if nothing shows up in her blood panel.

She's not dehydrated - she's drinking water and eating snow. Her tongue is pale but her gums aren't nor are they sticky.

The vet sent me home something to sooth her stomach along with anti biotics and something to put the bacteria back in her stomach, since she can't eat yogurt. I picked up some baby food and warmed it up, she turned up her nose. She won't eat the Natural Balance food roll anymore either. I gave her a snausage (out of desperation) and she wants to eat (the only thing she has shown interest in) it but she just picked it up and took it to her bed where she's laying with it.

So, back to the drawing board! Hopefully the meds will kick in tonight.
