    Salem Fell!!

He went out this morning in the rain, and was running too fast and he slid into the fence and fell down. He came back to the door limping on the back leg he fell on and crying.

I feel bad for him. I put him to bed with a kong and and we will just rest him today. How long should I give it before bringing him to the vet? Should I give him the weekend or should I bring him tomorrow if he is still sore? I think if I brought him in now she would just tell me to make him rest which I'm doing.

I'm hoping he starts to feel better tonight.

Yikes! Poor Salem.Crying  I would probably wait and see how he's doing later today, if he seems to be getting better, I'd wait the weekend, but if I didn't see any improvement, or it got worse I would take him tomorrow.  He's probably (hopefully) just a little sore.

Thanks. Thats what I'm thinking too.

He doesn't seem to be in pain just laying in bed. He is very vocal and would let us know if he was. I think it is just hurting him to walk on it.

you can also give him baby buffered aspirin for pain. I've given it to my hounds when they twist something or take the occasional header LOL.

Thanks! I will pick up some baby asprin for him.

I guess I am lucky that he has never hurt himself before. He is 3 1/2.

IME the more dogs running together, the more likely the occasional injury comes up LOL. A tiff, or a hard crazy play session, or a free for all chasing that squirrel or ball and someone trips up someone else, and there ya go...

salem looks like quite an active guy. this must be hard for him, and for you to see him in pain. you might try icing the leg, 10-15 minutes works great. gentle stretching and movement of the area will actually stimulate healing, just let salem guide you. arnica gel is a great natural topical anti-inflammatory. A 100% natural, drug-free option! good luck!

If I were you, I'd call my vet to ask. My vet is really good about walking me through things over the phone ("Look for X, Y, and Z, and if ABC happens, bring him in immediately.") Hope he's doing better soon :)

How big is Salem? He looks Cherokee size (apparently 65 pounds!) at least, in which case you need regular aspirin, unless you want to give 4 pills. Cherokee's minimum dose of aspirin is 325 mg, exactly one normal (not "maximum strength") tablet. Baby aspirin is only 81 mg. The dose is 5-15 mg per pound of body weight, every 8-12 hours.

    Re: Salem Fell!!

Hope he feels bettter soon.  My dogs love to play pretty rough and once in a while one will fall into one of the mine field holes that they dig in the back yard.  It usually elicits a pretty good yelp and a rather short lived limp.  I assume its kind of like when you step down on your ankle the wrong way and it kills for an hour and then all is fine.  Nobody has ever been seriously injured though.

    Re: Salem Fell!!

Thanks everyone. I went ahead and called the vet to see if he should be seen. He is still limping, but she said since he is putting weight on the leg it probably isn't too bad. She said to give him until Saturday and if he has not improved she will come in (the vet I like doesn't come in on weekends normally) and see him then. She said if he seems any worse at all to bring him in, and she told me about giving regular asprin because of his size. he's about 65 lbs too. He seems to feel a little better after the asprin. He isn't crying anymore at least (I felt so bad for him).

I know he isn't going to be happy with me. The vet told me no walkies until he is completely healed. he is just to go out and potty and come right back in. He is getting lots of attention though. I took the day off work to make sure he gets lots of loving, and dh is instructed to pick up a good bone on the way home from work.

    Re: Salem Fell!!

Oh poor Salem, I hope its nothing.  Prancer hurt herself yesterday also and won't put her leg down at all (unless she's standing completely still).   So she's on crate rest also.   Its too bad we can put them side by side, at least they could keep each other company !

Hopefully both Salem and Prancer are up and about real real soon.

People ask me if I think dogs go to heaven. I respond: Of course they do ! Heaven could only BE heaven if dogs are there

Hey Salem, milk all the TLC your mama is giving you for all it's worth.  Give her sad puppy eyes & I'm sure you'll get extra lovin's too.  Grady told me to pass that on to Salem.

Give him a kiss on the forehead from me.

    Re: Salem Fell!!

Salem really is milking it for all its worth. Hes got lots of belly-rubs, kisses, treats and a comfy blanket with a heating pad under it on the couch next to his mama. He looked too pitiful in his crate so he is allowed out as long as he lays still. dh said I better be careful or he will start faking injuries, lol.

I hope prancer starts feeling better soon too!
