What method of Flea treatment is best

We have 5 dogs and 3 cats so I can't afford to "test" all the different products available.  I was hoping to get some opinions on what works best.

I like Frontline, I had a problem 1 treatment on all 5 dogs took care of it :0) although I do plan on continuing to treat every other month just to make sure my dogs don’t pick fleas up from the squirrels again.

Did you use the topical treatment or the Frontline spray...also was it frontline or frontline plus?

We use Frontline Plus on both the dogs and the cats.  No problems here!

What I use is to give each animal (dog especially) a garlic gel cap once a day and then I spray their area with Permithrin (it is a spray that is based on Crysanthemum flowers) mixed with water (proper dilution) about once every two weeks (more often if the weather is really rainy).  I also mix a combination of about three ounces of lemon juice, the same amount of lavendar baby oil and two or three drops of essential citronella oil in a spray bottle and mix it well before each use and spray it on the animal and brush in.  It is harmless to the animal, tastes bad and smells good so they leave it alone and it works real well on cats, dogs, horses and people as an insect repellant, flea and tick killer (they literally drop off the animal) and best of all is cheap to make, makes a lot and keeps at room temperature.

I've used Frontline Plus but I plan to alternate Frontline Plus and K9 Advantix every few months (or season - depending on my research on when one would be better than the other).

I found fleas on Kenya.  I gave her a capstar tablet once a day for two days, immediately treated her and all the cats with Frontline Plus, and treated the ENTIRE house (including all rugs, bedding, furniture, and curtains) with products containing IGR (insect growth regulator, the only thing that will actually kill flea eggs by interrupting their life cycle).  I haven't seen any fleas....

I used Frontline plus for dogs.. I like frontline plus because it can be used on pregnant and nursing females and I had like week old puppies. My puppies were too young to use any on but I have not found any fleas on them at all and there was one before I used it. Just make sure you wash, clean, and spray everything your dog could have transferred the fleas or eggs to. I had only found like 4 fleas total on my 5 dogs so I was lucky and caught it before it became an even bigger problem. You probably already know this but you can’t use the same frontline for both cats and dogs so be sure and check anything you use on both.

Re: What method of Flea treatment is best

I use Advantage, and I'll tell you why. I personally have one dog and one cat, but I live with a total of two dogs and four cats. If I treat just my two, there would still be fleas. I can't afford $60ish a month for all six animals, and if I don't buy it and treat them, it won't get done. Sooo I buy the biggest tubes of Advantage and split it up. Advantage is exactly the same for dogs and cats (Frontline isn't), just the dosage if different. I get all six animals treated from a little over two of the big tubes, i.e. it costs me just a little bit more for all six then it would cost for just my two if I bought the pre-dosed stuff.

I buy it from dog.com. Free shipping if you spend $59 (grrrr, it used to be $49), and one of the cheapest prices anyway. You need a couple syringes to dose it correctly, and possibly a needle to get it out of the tube (but obviously remove the needle before putting it on the animal).

I'll find the dosing chart if you're interested.

They sell it that way on ebay (all different kinds) I saw it when I bought mine but I was a little afraid to try it because I hadn't heard personally of anyone who used it that way. Does anyone else treat there dogs/cats that way??

I'm interested!! Right now I'm using Frontline on 6 dogs and 2 cats and it is K-I-L-L-I-N-G us. $300+ every few months for Frontline is awful.

Pyrethrins are natural extracts made from flowers of chrysanthemum plants.  Pyrethrin is NOT the same as permethrin. Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethrin, and is less easily broken down than pyrethrin.

Permethrin is neurotoxic to insects, bees, mammals, and aquatic life.  K9 Advantix contains permethrin and a cat can die from merely licking a dog that has had this product applied.

I get the impression that you think that you are using a "natural" product, but I am afraid that you are not.  Be careful not to get this spray on you or to inhale any fumes.

    http://www.lisaviolet.com/cathouse/advantage.html

I use their actual by-weight dosages, not the amount Advantage packages for each weight range. I use 2.4 mL on 60 pound Cherokee, 3.2 mL on 75 pound Jaz, and 0.8 on each of the cats (10, 11, 13 and 16 pounds). 8.8 mL total, and the vials are 4.0 mL. I keep it the open stuff month to month and have never had an issue with that, it doesn't seem to lose potency in a month or even two.

I haven't seen ticks on any of my animals in a few years, but I'm not sure Advantage protects against them, so if you have lots of ticks around you, you might want to check that out.

There have been some lively discussions on this lately (see below).  Most folks seem to prefer Frontline Plus, but in some areas people think that the fleas have developed a resistance.  Some folks want a product that kills ticks faster.

The toxicity of products is also an issue.  For instance, K9 Advantix for dogs is out for you because it can kill your cats (if they lick the dog or cuddle with the dog and lick themselves).

Really effective flea and tick control involves indoor and outdoor control - as well as using products on the animals and feeding a really high quality diet.  Healthy pets do not attract as many parasites.
