    More Dysplasia Questions

Time is nearing for Teddi to probably have her surgery. Her first birthday is Monday but she isn't doing 'great'. We see an Ortho surgeon on Tuesday. I feel I am leaning toward the THR. I was wondering if people here who have done either the FHO or THR could tell me about the down time after surgery (how long) and what level of activity did their dog return to post surgically? Please I do not want to do the TPO, so don't look down on me for that. I have my reasons. I am looking for information on the FHO and THR. I have posted this request on another forum board and all anyone tells me is "your dog is on the outside edge of being eligible for the TPO". That is nice, but I am not considering that option, I do not want this to be a discussion about that. Thank you!

    Re: More Dysplasia Questions

My seven year old yellow lab, Koby had a THR on his Left side in July.  I unfortunately do not have a success story for you.  Despite our careful after care,  Koby got a major infection, and had to have two follow up surgeries.  The Board Certified Surgeon we chose has only had 2 other infections in his 20 years of practice, so we really hit some bad luck.  The last 3 months has been stressful.  His recovery from the first surgery was off from the beginning.  We could tell because he wouldn't put weight on his leg.  This week Koby is going in for his third surgery to remove the whole prosthesis and go complete an FHO.  The poor guy doesn't deserve all this :(

I dont' want to scare you, but I want to let others now that infection can happen to any dog.  We did not expect this at all.  I wish you the very best in your decision.

Some people rave about the THR.  When we were going through the decision process, everyone said you have to do it, your dog will be so happy afterwords. In 90% of the cases this is true.  Poor Koby is the 10% that it just didn't happen for.

    God Bless and good luck!

    Re: More Dysplasia Questions

Sorry about Koby. I have a dog who had a THR about 13 months ago and she's doing swell and I have a do who had an FHO about 2 years ago and he's doing swell. Koby is going to surprise you. He'll do so well after his FHO that you will be smiling from ear to ear.

Ann's dog came home last night from her THR surgery so we'll all keep our fingers crossed for Teddi. And, of course I'm keeping mine crossed for Koby, too.

Saving just one dog won't change the world . . . but surely the world will change for that one dog (unknown)
