Amstaffy...how bout some photos of the pups?????

I think Grayson may stick..now I just need a registered name. He certainly is a little character. This is my first "little dog". I grew up with GSDs and lost my last one 2 years ago. Now I have 3 mastiffs, a boxer, and this little muffin.

Amstaffy..all the pups are adorable..I especially like the girls. Why is Juliet " the pet puppy" ?- she's my fave. And while I am certainly not an expert on the breed nor can I recite the standard...I think she's gorgeous. Just curious and wanting to learn ...Is it just that she is going to a "pet home"?

There's a breeder in my area and I am going to ask them to eval my pup. I used to show GSDs and might be interested in showing my little guy.

RE: Looking for a French Bulldog

Grayson sure is a CUTIE!!!!! What a nice short back...I can't wait to see more pictures of your little hunny as he grows up. I'm fond of the fawn/creams myself...this brindle litter was purely for structure and temperament.

Juliet is a "pet" pup because her tail is a bit longer then it should be and higher set(up in the air). She is also much smaller then the rest of the litter although she is definately one of the cutest pups with a lot of attitude.
Believe me I have gone back and forth on this little girl if I really want to place her or keep her.

RE: Looking for a French Bulldog

I never would have noticed about her tail! I was too focused on looking at her adorable face!

I think you should keep her  [;)]

I'll try to post some better photos of Graison soon- the one photo where he is standing looks wierd because he's standing oddly with his leg.. Its hard to get pictures of him because he never holds still.

The breeder here in my area agreed to look at him, and while he's still young yet, they can point out any major faults.

RE: Looking for a French Bulldog

I live in northeast Kansas, near Kansas City KS and Missouri.

I don't mean to offend you, but you live in the heart of "puppy mill" country.  I hope you aren't buying this Frenchie to start a breeding biz.  If you just genuinely like the breed, Jaime can help you a lot, and will have great advice.
The comment is made just because I know there are lurkers out there who need to know...
Your little guy is adorable.  Good luck with him. [:)]

RE: Looking for a French Bulldog

Spiritdogs - I do actually take offense at your comment..Just because you think I live in "puppy mill" country doesn't mean that I run a puppymill or am going to breed any of my dogs. I am aware that Missouri is notorious for puppymills, however to my knowledge there are none in the area of Kansas where I live. I have been involved in animal rescue for most of my life and know that there are many animals out there needing homes.

I have 24 years of experience with dogs and have done some light showing, but have never bred any of my dogs and don't plan to. I'm not really even sure what you meant by your post or how it correlates to my original topic of looking for a puppy -which I have already found. I don't recall ever mentioning anything about wanting to breed French Bulldogs.

I have mentioned possibly showing him, but that is for fun and is something I may or may not do. I work full time and am working on a master's degree and don't have much time. Plus, Graison is my pet and family member first and foremost. I did have him looked at by a local breeder who does show and just finished one of his males to earning his championship.I basically just wanted to know what he thought of him and meet the only other person in my town (that I know of) that owns Frenchies.

I do belive that Jaime and others on this board can provide a wealth of information on the breed, which I am grateful for, as this is my first Frenchie.

Jaime - would you consider him a fawn due to the darker "stripe" down his back? His sides are ligher, more creamy. Or would he be a "creamy-fawn"?

RE: Looking for a French Bulldog

I would have to say from the picture he is a fawn, and quite adorible. we here in Pa. get allot of comments about puppy mills, we have more than our fair share here too, and as a breeder of french bulldogs, and as any good reptutable breeder, we need to work on informing the public on what to look for when looking for and purchasing a puppy, we have people who contact us regularly requesting a puppy of certain sex and color and on a specific date, I wish it was that easy, I prefer when we get contacted by someone and they are looking for a healthy puppy, those are the people who move the the front of the line.

if someone takes the time and effort to understand the breed, and puts a active effort into researching the the breed and especially the problems inhierant to the breed, then if you feel breeding is for you then so be it, you should also have a breeder mentor of some type. no one person has all the answers, and being open and honest about breed issues will only help the breed. everyone has to start someplace.

RE: Looking for a French Bulldog

    Thanks Jrobertson -

I have a question: The Frenchies that I have seen have varied much in size and structure. I have seen some really big ones with huge heads and some smaller ones. Is the tendency becoming (like the "American motto") bigger is better? Seems to me that many people in the dog world think that bigger is better..in many breeds. Do you think the Frenchie is headed that way?

The breeder that I met the other day had nice dogs, but in my opinion they were way too big, and maybe its just about my own preference as he just finished his male to his championship. But the male was huge (as were the other dogs he showed me)..definitely not a lap dog, and while he states that he weighed 26lbs, he still seemed really big. Not to say that he wasn't gorgeous, just not a lap dog.

RE: Looking for a French Bulldog

the breed standard states that French bulldog must be under 28 pounds, some people like them bigger but most prefer them smaller, we consider them to be lap dogs, we do know one breeder in Ca. who says they should be foot warmers. over the past year we have seen an increase in size, but this is mostly coming from the imports, and just like people are unsuspectingly supporting puppy mills by buying from pet shops, the same is happening with the brokers, they get the pups and put them in stores and they sell, Karen and I have been involved in rescue for 10 years, and this year already we have rescued 8, 3 of which were the biggest/tallest frenchies we had ever seen.

as i said we believe frenchies are lap dogs, and thats what we breed for, we like them on the smaller side.

RE: Looking for a French Bulldog

I too prefer smaller "lap dog" size Frenchies. This breeder's dogs weren't all that tall, but they were very thick/stocky.

I have mastiffs so for me there really isn't much point in having a small dog if you can't pick it up and hold it. Otherwise I might as well as just gotten another large dog.

I've just personally noticed that the trend seems to be 'bigger is better" for many breeds in the show ring - or that the breed standard begins to deviate from what it used to be and lean more towards form vs. function..one reason I no long show GSDs...
