    Mini Schnauzer Brutally Attacked

To read the full story please the site inmy profile.  Apparently we have a neighbor that took it upon himself to attack our dogs not once but twice.  The second attack (in our OWN yard) resulted in our 3 year old Mini-Schnauzer having a shattered left femur (per the vet, it's clearly a blunt trauma wound, i.e. heavy piece of wood or a bat, etc.)

Please visit our web page for the full story.
    Thank you,

This is horrible!  Why would anyone scale the fence into a backyard and take a baseball bat to a poor little dog?

I am so sorry that your family is having to deal with this.  The trauma to your poor little boy is especially tragic.

I wonder if there is a company in your area with trained guard dogs who might be willing to loan you a big dog for your backyard - even for a few nights.  That would let you guys get some unworried sleep.  It sure wouldn't hurt to ask.

Have you talked to your neighbors?  It is getting easier and easier to set up video surveillance.  If your neighbors could set up cameras that record to disk, they could point their cameras at your house and play the recordings at fast forward to see if they can spot anyone who shouldn't be there.

That is horrible! What a low life scum bag. I bet he would not dare to be so "brave" had your Jack been a large dog.

Have you upset anyone? At work? Maybe fired someone or written someone up? I have seen people do very stupid things over some minor offense.

    RE: Mini Schnauzer Brutally Attacked

I hated to sound unsimpathetic, but I have a question to ask. Was there any reason why the dog would have been attacked? If you heard the story of Diane Whipple, the women who was attacked and killed by two dogs, you might have known how oblivious the owners were. They both said it was a bizarre, unpredictable incident while neighbors told a different story. They said that the dogs bit and terrified people on a regular basis. What I'm saying is this: did the dog have any behavioral problems that irritated neighbors? If he did, this would still not condone what the man did, but get to the bottom of it. I have seen people with monstrous dogs that bothered everyone, and they completely ignored the problems and even thought it was cute that the dog barked all day and jumped on people. I'm not being accusitory, though, I'm just wondering...

Jack does bark at times, but he is a small dog and is not an "over the top" barker and isn't a jumper either.  I'm sure that could probably be annoying to people at times but honestly I would have rather them call the police and say he was a disturbance to the neighborhood than to do this. Ya know?

    RE: Mini Schnauzer Brutally Attacked

Honestly, I would snap if someone did this to my dog, and I knew who it was.  There would be more blunt force trauma, I would be arrested, and another fight would ensue.  This would be among family members concerning who gets the honor of posting bail.

This is no bs, my whole extended family considers dogs as family members, you may as well have gone after my wife or kids.  People like that, much like most criminals, do not care if people talk to them, the police question them, and do not respond in a normal fashion to any of the usual socially acceptable forms of communication.

They do understand pain, and need to be spoken to in language that their twisted system of values understands.  It sucks to have to lower yourself to that sort of behavior, but that is something I would consider as an assult on my family, and would be dealt with using force appropriate to the situation.

I know exactly what you mean.  I'm trying to turn that anger into something positive.  If you'd like to see Jack we posted his video on YouTube and its on our site...  He's doing well considering what he's been through.  He so badly wants to play ball when I take him out now, he doesn't understand that he can't be back to 'normal' yet...

    RE: Mini Schnauzer Brutally Attacked

Oh, nice vid of Jack, his face reminds me of my cairn Ozzy, who passed in June.  He would have been 16 this month.  What a little trooper Jack is, he seems to be doing very good emotionally, I'll bet he will heal up just fine thanks to being relatively young.  I certainly wouldn't be as calm as you, gut instinct would override sensible thinking.  Everyone has a different point where this happens I guess.

A commutated fracture is one where the bone is turned to powder, or nearly so.  This would occur more from am object such as a baseball bat than a broomhandle.  Police are discouraged from using those large flashlights as an impact weapon because of this, and are trained to use a baton instead.

I hope everything turns out well for Jack, it seems he is doing good.  Him & Jill must miss each other terribly, they seem so close from looking at your pictures.  It has to be hard keeping a dog from being a dog, they have so much energy & don't understand why they aren't allowed to play.

    RE: Mini Schnauzer Brutally Attacked

We are sorry to hear of your loss.  Jack and Jill are part of our family, we call them "the babies."

Its been a rough two weeks, if you check our site and Jack's blog, you'll often see that I'm up and posting and searching for info on the web and learning how to develop web pages, etc. often till 4 or 5 a.m.  Last night was the first night I actually slept from 11 on.

Keeping our wits about us and not going off the handle is key, it only lowers ourselves to the level of the person that did this.  I have talked to every person on our street and 9 out of 10 of them own dogs or dogs and cats.  Due to some discussions we had with people, we think we know who did it.  There have been other incidence, one cat was even shot with a pellet gun.  Which makes it even harder to not go off the handle.

Yes you are right about the fracture, it was so severe that it must have been a very strong (adult male) swing with a bat.  Which is what the vet thought had hit him.  We also found the fence broken where it looks like someone climbed it and broke a piece coming in and a piece when they went out. Sure they bark, but never did we leave them out for more than 1/2 an hour if we were not with them.  We've got neighbors that have 7 dogs that bark all the time.  That's what dogs do, they bark when they see something.  Plus we live with lots of trees and squirrels around, so there's always something to bark at.  But it was not excessive.

I have told the police, but we get the "brushed under the carpet" feeling.  It was 2 weeks ago today that Jack was attacked and even though we've called them, submitted to every local news station with the exception of one, the only thing that we feel has gotten some response was actually going out to the online community and speaking out.  In response to an earlier post, no we have no enemies, I haven't fired anyone -

Whoever attacked Jack (and as I said I'm 95 % sure I know who it is) lives nearby and is a nutjob.  I just hope that despite their lack of response to us the police are doing their work.  In the meantime I'm hoping to raise awareness, that acts of cruelty to animals (dogs, cats, every pet that people) occur all the time, at the hands of owners, neighbors, and even in well funded animal fighting rings occur all the time.  People need to report such acts to their local police or SPCA.

Violence such as what happened to Jack are often the early acts of a sick person that will eventually (if they have not already) moved on to abusing people.  The Michal Vick thing is just scratching the surface of that industry - people need to remain vigilant and active in these times.  I've done a lot of reading these past few weeks and its sickening what goes on.

Anyway - sorry for the long winded response - it keeps me occupied.

Police aren't being as responsive as you'd like? No problem - contact your local newspaper. See if they'll run a public interest story on you and your poor dog - at the very least it will raise public awareness to brutality and at best will publicly out the person who did it, make the police pay more attention, and prevent future attacks!

Poor Jack!  How awful for him to have to go through this.

I am so sorry to hear that the Police are not being as aggressive as they should be.  I would think that with animal cruelty being in the headlines almost daily they would have a little more interest in helping you out.  The suggestion about calling a local newspaper is a good one.

Have you tried contacting the SPCA law enforcement?  They might be interested in hearing not only about Jack but the other animals in the neighborhood that have been hurt as well.  Clearly someone in your area has a real problem.  Good luck and I hope Jack is back to his old self soon.

    RE: Mini Schnauzer Brutally Attacked

[font="verdana"]Please see our site profile for a full update, but we got awful news.  Jack requires another surgery.  Due to Jack's weight, and the type of fracture, the plate that was installed was bent.  We're waiting for an update from the vet.  the surgery might happen today or tomorrow, depending on if they can fit him in.  We're just sick over this.

My feeling is they should have installed 2 plates to begin with, Jack is a heavy schnauzer.  So his bone structure did not allow for a larger plate, so the appropriate sized plate was used, however due to the fracture the surgeon was unable to place a screw in the very middle section of the plate.  So despite all of our care and efforts to keep Jack within his post-op guidelines over the past 2 weeks, he has to endure another surgery to fix what I feel was a bad call by the surgeon at the time the first surgery was performed.  Oh and of course, this is costing another 1k, they are doing it at cost, I feel because they might have made a mistake.

So our adventure through this traumatic series of events starts back at square one.  Jack's recovery is going to begin again - I guess everything happens for a reason -

Please visit our site for the full story of today's events.

    RE: Mini Schnauzer Brutally Attacked

I would be putting an Elizabethan/ cone collar on him so he won't be biting at the itchy incisional line. As it heals he will be way more itchy and the dog does real damage and infection will inhibit his good progress.

As far as the creature that did this to your little dog, he must have other terrible illegal things that he does to watch for as well as beating of little animals.  Report, observe and involve a neighborhood watch.  Catch him and have him dealt with.    In your own  discussion with neighbors, any other dealings already noted?  I bet he may already have a criminal record going.  That kind of bad is not a singular deed.
