    Greenish snot and sneezing

Hello all! I'm a noob....looks like there is a wealth of great information and support here!

Ok, so a bit of history - my boy is a Lab/Dane mix, 11 years old....pretty darn good shape if you ask me. He's mobile, spunky and playful despite two cruciate ligament replacements in the past 2 years. My boy is pretty resiliant...I'm a proud mom.

About a year ago I thought to myself, "Mo is getting older, perhaps I should get him on a better, more wholesome food" He had been on Purina ONE for a very long time with no issues, but I had read about quality of ingridients....this 'n that and I decided to switch him to EVO. BIG mistake. #1, too much protine...threw his cratnine blood levels way off among other things....off the EVO....but we also noticed all of the indicators of a new food allergy. Geez....so the vet perscribed Purina HA. All symptoms dissapeared and we were back to normal. His skin had started to get a bit dryer (I think just because he is older) so we put him on 3V caps....no good....all allergy symptoms returned with the addition of the snotty greenish/yellow discharge and sneezing. We're a week off the 3V caps now and the scratching issue seems to be getting better, but he's still really, snotty and sneezing. Can this type of thing be caused by allergies? Food, or airborne? At what point should I make (yet another) trip to the vets? There are absolutely no other sypmtoms....no cough, no 'reverse sennze,' temp I don't know about, but he seems normal in every other way.....just snotty.

    Any opinions on this one?

Thanks guys *wave* nice to 'meet' you all. [:)]

snotty green or yellow  usualy indicate a staph or strep infection...might be good to have it cultures and looked at.

It can be caused by allergies - food or airborne.

The dry skin could indicate thyroid problems which could mess up any attempts to address the allergy issues.  I would ask to have a thyroid test done at MSU (Michigan State University) or Hemopet to get their result interpretation and dosage advice.  Both companies are doing thyroid research.  My personal preference is Hemopet.  http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/HEMOPET.HTM

Ask for the 6-way test for T3, T4, free T3, free T4, T3 autoantibodies, and T4 autoantibodies.  It gives a full picture of the thyroid function and avoids the possibility of having to do another blood draw to get the additional values.  When the autoantibodies are present, measurement of T4 and T3 levels will be spuriously high.

Note that in addition to lab costs, your vet will naturally charge for drawing the blood, preparing it, and shipping it.  Optionally, the vet may agree for you to do the mailing if, for instance, you want to take the package to the shipper immediately.

One way to test for allergy problems is simply to try an antihistamine.  If it helps, you know you have an allergy problem.  Unfortunately, if it doesn't work, that tells you that either there are no allergy problems or your particular antihistamine doesn't work for this dog.

    RE: Greenish snot and sneezing

    Thanks for your thoughts everyone!

I decided not to visit the vet this weekend. I actually think he's doing a bit better. The morning I wrote to you all was the worst I'd seen it. I think perhaps he had just sneezed or something....it was really gross and kind of freaked me out. I did decide to give him another week or so, as long as things don't get any worse. I'm thinking it might still be a residual allergy symptom coming off the 3V caps.

Janet - thanks for the thyroid test suggestion. I think my boy was tested for almost everything under the sun.....except thyroid! We'll certainly have that done if he doesn't clear up.

Hope you all had a great weekend! [:)]
