    RE: Spay and Neuter Puppies

Have the pups already received any vaccines?  If so, at what age?

No the pups have not had any vaccines yet. (as far as I know) They are seven weeks now and I'm searching for a Vet now so that they can get their 8 week puppy check up, heart worm preventative, and de-worming.
I like the idea of making a de-wormer, however, i still want to go to the vet to have their do-worming while they're young just to be safe. =D
I was going to buy some flea/tick drops for them from petsmart buy they're to young. i didn't want to get a flea collar because the smell or something gives me really bad migraine. [&:]
But as soon as the turn 8 weeks I'm going to use the flea/tick drops.

janet_rose yes. I'll edit my profile (If I can figure out how to do it =D) But I am in the US and live in Richmond, Virginia.

Good!!  My suggested way of doing vaccines:

Please be careful where you allow the pups to put their feet.  Parvo is very contagious and can live in soil (or homes) for 1-2 years.  Concrete outside is fairly safe.  Floors at PetsMart are not.

Much of the stuff at the pet store is too toxic - including those flea collars.  This post has my choices for heartworm and flea meds, plus info on the heartworm life cycle:  http://forum.dog.com/asp/m.asp?m=305506

If you like my suggestions, then when looking for a vet, ask if they carry
    (1) the vaccine Intervet Progard Puppy DPV and
    (2) the heartworm "preventative" Interceptor or, if not, whether they will write a prescription for it.

Typically products that kill fleas do not repel fleas.  There are non-toxic flea/tick repellents - some that you can make yourself:

six weeks? littermates?   what paragon of a breeder sold you these guys?

Yes, I know I did a huge No-No.  I really didn't do any of my research until after I got the pups.  [&o]

Don't let one person sway you to think that this is "No-No".  There are number of us on this forum that have littermates and enjoy the special bond we have with them.  We each will tell you that we did not experience any unique problems because they are littermates.  There is nothing wrong with a breeder who accomodates the dog owner by providing littermates.

I forgot to add that you need to be very careful at the vet's office.  As much as they try to sterilize their waiting room and exam rooms, it just isn't safe to assume the office is Parvo-free.

You and the pups should touch as little as possible while there.  That includes door handles, chairs, walls, counters, etc.  Bring a towel to put on the exam table and bleach it when you get home.  Bleach the bottom of your shoes (1:10 solution) before you wear those shoes in your house.

Be sure that people wash their hands before touching the pups.  That includes the vets and vet techs.  If there is any resistance, just laugh and say "Please.   I am paranoid, so please humor me."

Rat terriers are small dogs, so I would suggest 5 months. I say that because my little mixed terrier went into heat at 6 months.

My 5 month recommendation was for the female only.  You could wait until later for the male and it would probably be simpler to deal with one surgery at a time.

bashfull puppy, we were all new dog owners once.As a first time dog owner, you are in for a wonderful journey with lots of laughter and many tears.  Welcome to the dog world.
As someone who has held dying dogs in my arms I am a huge fan of early spay/neuter unless there is reason to believe these are show/champion pups.  But thats just me.  Ask your friends for recommendations of vets that they like and trust.  Talk to responsible breeders or your local breed club.  Ask lots of questions, don't allow the vets to talk down to you or dismiss you.  YOU are responsible for your dogs health and YOU get to make the final decision.

    RE: Spay and Neuter Puppies

janet_rose.  Thank You so much for all the helpful advice and tips.  I'm most definately going to try the natural flea and tick repellant that your post discussed.  It's sounds very simple and interesting.

You and the pups should touch as little as possible while there.

I have heard many bad things about vets office regarding germs and handling your puppies.  I've warned my boyfriend and we're going to make sure that noone tries to touch or play with the puppies unless they want to wash their hands before hand [:D] I do get paranoid about germs and my health as well as my puppies so we will be taking extra precautions when we have our first vet visit.

DPU. Thank You for your words of encouragment.  I do sometimes feel like i'm being criticized for having puppies from the same litter, and I still don't understand why others feel it is a bad thing?

Snooks. Thank You also for your advice and thanks for welcoming me to the dog world lol.  I'm aready starting to experience the happy moments (like when my puppies finally learned their names and to sit) and the dissapointing ones (like the unsuccessful crate training-I bought a to large crate for them to share. not good since they only pee in one corner then sleep in the other. completely my fault.  Don't worry I am buying another crate with dividers so that the puppies can have their own side of the crate and hopefully learn.)

Also on a random note: I am eligible to have the puppies spayed and nuetered for free at my local SPCA since I am a full time college student [:D]  So when the puppies get older I will most definately be doing that.

    RE: Spay and Neuter Puppies

Just a heads up about the SPCA.  Make your appointment now, you can always cancel if you need it.  I also have littermates and around 5 1/2 months it became apparent that they needed to be fixed ASAP.  The Humane Society had a three month waiting list and my vet was booked too.  Luckly a rescue group was having a mobile clinic so I was able to get in the next day.
My two puppies (one is a foster but I think she's staying) have pretty bad littermate syndrome.  Someone posted a good link and I'll try to find it later.  My trainer let me bring them to class on seperate weeks but they are still a challenge.  I find leaving one at home is difficult.   They always give you that  "Why can't I come too" look.

    Edited to add link:   [linkhttp://www.caninedevelopment.com/Sibling.htm]http://www.caninedevelopment.com/Sibling.htm[/link]

    RE: Spay and Neuter Puppies

Red Devil. Thanks for the tip.  I have been calling the SPCA for the past two weeks now to schedule an appointment for the future but I can already tell that it's going to be difficult.

Also after reading the caninedevelopment.com/sibling webpage I almost started to cry [:(]
I don't want my puppies to be have littermate syndrome and I already see signs of them having it (they starting to fight and when i seperate them-bring one upstairs and leave the other downstairs-they stary crying and whining)
I've already become to attatched to my pups and I just can't part with one of them.  So now i'm just going to have to work extraaaa hard and keep them seperated.

I was already walking them seperatly but they were sharing a crate and a food bowl.  BUT now after reading this article Sharing a crate and food bowl is no longer an option.
