    Any vegans or vegetarians?

If you are a vegan or a vegetarian what made you decide to become one?  Who/What inspired you to?  Do you feel better and/or look better (in your opinion) than when you were not?  How many people have you inspired to become vegan or vegetarian (your own guess)?

I went to peta2.com today and I am seriously thinking about becoming a vegan. Is it really hard?  Is there some things I need to know that are very important before I do?  And is it hard to find stuff you can eat at the regular grocery stores?

If you do not agree with this you may state that.  But please no personal attacks and no rubbing stuff in people faces.

     Thank You!

Only negative thing I will say is peta? *shudder* no thanks.
I think vegetarians and vegans are admirable in a very real sense, to me at least...they have the willpower I do not, to eat healthy stuff [:)] I think the same of anyone with the discipline to "just say no" to junk, carnivore/herbivore or inbetween....deityofyourchoice knows I have never said no....shut up Billy...I meant to junk food.

    WB Gina! I missed you![:D]

I'm vegan. I was vegetarian for years (like.... 8?) before I went vegan, permanently. I'd done vegan off and on, but never stuck to it. I went vegan, with one of my best friends going vegetarian, as a new year's resolution, this year. Neither of us has waivered, and we both feel better for it.

I can't remember (how SAD is that?) what originally caused me to go over "to the dark side" and become a vegetarian. Probably, I didn't want to eat animals. I feel and look much better. When I first went vegetarian, I lost just over 50 lbs, by eating my vegetables! Since going vegan, my joints have stopped hurting for the most part, and my skin is much better than it has been in the past. My sinuses are very, very happy with the decision (dairy is an inflamatory food).

It is *not* hard for me to be vegan. I eat out. I eat food from the regular grocery store. I will never be a "true" vegan, though. My dogs will *always* eat meat, if their health permits. It isn't a part of my belief system to force my own issues on another being. I have a deep respect for life, and I promised to take the best possible care of them. For us, that means I make thier meals up, fresh, of meat, veggies, and supplements.

I have been vegetarian for 10 years.  I also don't remember why I made the decision...it probably has something to do with me seeing my friend's dad cut a chicken's head off to "show me how cool it was" when I was 7.  I stopped eating poultry after that and five years later I gave up all meat.  I would like to be vegan, but I am having a hard time with that.

jennie_c_d-Do you find it more expensive to be vegan?  This is the main problem I'm having right now.

I am a vegetarian.....I feel strongly about it ( see signature).....I have been a veggie for years, and I wish I would have done it when I was able to choose on my own.
I found out about how livestock was treated a very long time ago, and it turned my stomach.
By doing enough research years ago I found out that I don't need meat to be a healthy person.........one of my biggest problems I had was giving up gummybears[8D].....but,  I am gummybear free[:D]

I'm not a veggie but admire those who are!  I don't have the will power.  Also, growing up we ate meat with every dinner b/c my dad got it himself so it was cheap and nutritious.  I would have starved without meat, even though it got really old after a while.  I will say I prefer to eat meat that we get ourselves (deer, fish, duck, and turkey are the staples).  It tastes better, seems a lot healthier, and does not come from overcrowded farms where the animals AND people are treated like worst than crap.  I like knowing exactly where it came from and who prepared it.  I despise all meat that is stamped into something other than its original shape (hot dog, hamburger, sausage, bolonge, etc) and won't touch it with a ten foot pole.

    Yeah....
Ok so I went on the peta2.com website and went to the e-card and watched those videos.  after I saw them I was so disgusted!  That was only last night but I have not eaten meat since.  Me and one of my best friends ( i emailed her the e-card thing) both decided we are going vegetarian together.  I went out to eat with my mom and sisters and brother tonight at a mexican restaurant and I wasnt even tempted to eat meat because I had the video images in my head.  People say it is hard to be vegetarian.  But I do not think it will be that way for me.  It kinda made me sick when my family was eating meat tonight!  Not to be rude to you who do eat meat or anything!  But I do think my friend and I will stick to being vegetarians.  We vowed if either of us EVER even think about eating meat then we will show each other the video again!  But I really want to make a goal to become a vegan.  But I don't think my friend will do it with me so we will wait a couple years of being vegetarian before I try to go solo with the whole vegan thing.  I think that will be much harder than vegeatarian!

I'm also a vegetarian.  I've felt much better since stopping meat.  I do still have milk in my coffee or cereal.  I do eat cheese too.  My only advice to you is to make sure you are eating well and getting what you need.  I've had some issues with bruising easily and anemia and some other stuff from not doing it right.

Take liquid, sublingual b vitamins, from the get-go. That's my biggest, bestest advice. Lacking b vitamins caused me to develop rosacea. It can also cause issues like bruising and anemia.

    RE: Any vegans or vegetarians?

I've been vegetarian for longer than not (I'm 32 and started phasing out animal products starting before I turned 16). My biggest piece of advice, if you don't know already, is: LEARN TO COOK!!! Learn to read labels and learn to cook things from scratch. And learn to love all different kinds of (non-meat) food. Different cuisines, different weird kinds of vegetables--I don't consider myself to have done a good job of shopping unless the check-out person has to ask me at least once what type of vegetable or fruit it is that I have in order to weigh it. It also really helps if you learn to love tofu, seitan and tempeh. Don't be a mac and cheese-etarian.

I became a vegetearian for ethical reasons. I love animals, of all kinds. I figured, if I don't have to eat them in order to live and be healthy, why continue to do so? Later in life I became a Buddhist and our code of ethics says that if you don't have to take a life, don't.

But get used to people doing things like espencer just did. People love to rub your face in it. Just have some grace about it and be the bigger person. No one likes a preachy vegetarian and people will use the excuse that all vegetarians are preachy in order to justify being obnoxious to you. In actual fact the majority of vegans and vegetarians are not preachy and just quietly go about our lives like normal people, and the best way to demonstrate that that is the case is just to do that.

No, no, i dont think vegetarians are preachy, they have the right to eat and stop eating whatever they want, no need to be defensive, if you dont like steak thats peferctly fine with me

Now, i dont know if some people actually find "offensive" when they see a steak or they just dont pay attention to it since they dont like it
