I really don't feel like this should be a topic up for discussion and I really don't get your post. If there are people who need advise on this topic, why is it that there are certain people who make them feel uncomfortable to ask for it. This is a very touchy subject and as far as I am concerned, it needs to be treated with kid gloves. I totally respect the people who are searching for answers and have the courage to ask questions. This is just a VERY INSENSITIVE POST.

Reply Contact excuse me lena...but most people here know that i am recovering from a major depression episode, and am on meds myself...   so just like a member of an ethnic group can make ethnic jokes about his own group...

  RE: anybody here NOT on depression medicine? Reply Contact I didn't find it a problem, I know Joel's situation. Some people can joke about it. My whole family is on meds. My uncle is Bi-polar, my 2 cousins are skitzo (don't know  spelling) my 2 aunts are on anti-depresants, my grandfather is also on them. When we get together it's a big joke, we all tease eachother and laugh that it's only a matter of time before my brother and I are on them, since the craziness runs in the family.   I'm sorry if this offends some people, but we (my family) went through some very terrible times especially with my Uncle who is Bi-polar it almost tore the family apart. So now that we joke about it it makes it alot easier on everyone. And they don't mind a bit, they would rather we laugh and have fun instead of being causious and worried that they might lose it at any moment. That's just how we deal with it, I'm not saying that it is the way everyone should.

Reply Contact thanks, angel for saving me...i thought i was about to get into my first fight since returning...   when i start fighting, i get all nervous, and have to start making more jokes.    i probably would have finished the last post by claiming to be half-black, and telling some good ethnic jokes...or tell some jewish ones that were a bit off-color...   and since i was warned that there will be no future warnings...just kapowee, i'm gone forever...i am indebted to you...   and no, and i will not privately e-mail the jokes to anyone...

I WAS NOT MAKING FUN OF ANYONE IN PARTICULAR...POINTING OUT AN INTERESTING OBSERVATION CONCERNING OUR GROUP...CONCERNING OUR MODERN SOCIETY... IS THERE ANY ONE OUT THERE WHO TAKES MEDICINE, WHO TOOK OFFENSE...ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU KNOW NOW I ALSO AM ON MEDS? i have a feeling that lena and sooner are not...it is the old "i am afraid you might be hurting someones feelings" bit...please take some chill pills.

Reply Contact I have never been on medication for depression or any other mental disorder.  However, in my younger days, I smoked a lot of pot and did a lot of coke.  It is entirely possible that activity killed all of the brain cells that might have eventually caused some kind of mental disturbance.    As the lion in the jungle catches the slowest and weakest antelope, drugs kill the slowest and weakest brain cells.   I have epilepsy, which is very controlled, with medication.  I am very fortunate in that respect.  I am also fortunate in that I get to make epileptic jokes.   Q:  What do you do when an epileptic has a seizure in the bathtub?   A:  Throw in your laundry. When your going though it you do feel no one can understand your situation and that your abnormal, It really helps to know others are or have gone though it. I guess its all how you read it.  I'm not on meds and I give credit to Cujo. Reply Contact Depression is not a mental illness.  It is a PHYSICAL illness and is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.  This happens, in a nutshell because the little receptors are too efficient about sucking up the chemicals that NEED to be left in the space BETWEEN the receptors.  And yeah, I could give you all the technicals names, but my text books and physch notes area already packed up.  The biggie is the seratonin, which is a "feel good" chemical tho.  While there are a number of factors that can cause this imbalance a genetic pre-dispostion is a biggie.   Because sooo many people see needing help balancing those chemicals as a taboo, it truely isn't a joking matter.  Hopefully at some point the WORLD will be willing to accept depression for what it is and not see it as "crazy" or "what does SHE have to be depressed about?" or "well, you know that whole family has mental problems".  Until that time comes, it truely isn't funny.
