    Aggressive Dachshund...

I have a male mini dachshund who is extremely aggressive towards other dogs (big or small).

We have a female chihuahua (who he has been with since he was a puppy) as well and he has never shown aggression towards her.

Usually when we are out walking if he sees another dog he will bark and it gets worse as we approach.  At dog parks, he barks the whole time and tries to snap at the other dogs when they get too close.  Is there anything I can do to make him more dog friendly?

    RE: Aggressive Dachshund...

    Welcome to idog.

For now, nix taking him to the dog park.  He flat out doesn't belong there until he learns some manners.  Walk just him for awhile and KEEP his attention on you by being the most fascinating thing in the UNIVERSE.  Carry premium, super smelly, super tasty treats and periodically GIVE him one....just for walking beside you. Now, you're going to have to really be on your toes and when you SEE a dog approaching, turn around and go the other way, cross the street, whatever, but go away from the other dog.  Very s  l  o  w  l  y, and over time, gradually increase just ONE more step before you turn around, and when you turn, tell him what a good boy he is and shove some more treats in his mouth.  This problem did NOT happen overnite and you won't cure it over nite.  It's likely to literally take months and months and months.  Be patient, be consistent and be FASCINATING......he'll get it eventually.

    RE: Aggressive Dachshund...

Being dog aggressive is not particular to dachshunds.  It's usually a result of a dog that was not properly socialized in puppyhood, or did not continue with socialization to dogs outside his pack.  Often, with small dogs, it is simply that the larger dogs overwhelm them, and in an effort to get the dog to play or be friendly, owners "overface" them, and instead of getting better, they get worse.
The OP might want to read "Scaredy Dog - Understanding and Rehabilitating Your Reactive Dog" by Ali Brown.  Good stuff about how to desensitize the little guy so you can have pleasant walks.

    RE: Aggressive Dachshund...

Definitely related to socialization, I think. My Dachshund (who was given to me as an adult) has gotten 1000x better with training, walking, and light socialization (I keep it low level, to avoid stressing her out).

Hey Anne, (remember when you had to tell me s-l-o-w-l-y?) a dog who yips, yaps, pulls, lunges, and has hissy fits in general is reactive, right? So that book might be good for me, with Teenie and her crazy leash behavior (which *IS* getting dramatically better with just basic training and attention work)?

    Yup, I remember. [;)]

That's actually a great book for anyone.  The more we understand about what can go wrong, the more we act to prevent it with the next dog (and, for people like us, until our own lights go out, there's always another dog who needs a home...)

    RE: Aggressive Dachshund...

My dog Zoey is reactive and about two weeks ago I stopped taking her on walks because of it.  Instead of walks I have been using the time to teach her the perfect, focused sit.  I started in the house so there would be no distractions and when she mastered that we spent about a week out in the back yard walking a little and then sitting for longer periods of time, with her focused on me.  We have just progressed to the front yard and road in front of my house.  Now I am waiting for a dog to come along very far away so we can work on sitting and focusing during that. It has been very, very slow and a little boring but I think this might just work.

Oh- and I have been using Glenda's liver treats for rewards.  Zoey loves them!

Keep up the good (if slightly boring) work.  I know it will pay off. [;)]

Its like watching paint dry, LOL!  An extra added benefit is that she is also learning how to walk nicely on a leash wearing only her martingale collar (goodbye prong!) at the same time.

    RE: Aggressive Dachshund...

I own two mini dachshunds and they both have bouts with some dogs. Dachshunds has the tendency to have terrier like characteristics. Is your male intact. Most dachshund males will act like this if they are intact. Just remember that dachshunds where breed to hunt prey some what bigger then them. And some of them can be jealous of other animals.
One reason the dog has so many friends: He wags his tail instead of his tongue..

    RE: Aggressive Dachshund...

    Uhh, yeah.

Dachshund means, "badger dog" in German.
They *are* a terrier. They go to ground and hunt. That's what terriers do. Some dumb English person mistranslated "hund" as "hound" and that's why Doxies are in the hound group.

    Jaye, play nice.
