    Books?

not the training kind ... but has anyone got a favourite dog related book? either biography or fiction... i'm into the classics mostly.. Jack London's dog stories always appealed to me more than any other as a kid, and i read one called Dogsbody several years ago.. and a few about wolves or northern breed (Farley Mowat, Walk Across America etc) Another top fav. is one called Thor by Wayne Smith (they made a movie about it called Bad Moon, but i warn you to avoid this one.... its barf worthy!!)

But i'm always looking for new reading material.. without going to Amazon and typing "Dogs" in the search bar lol

Beautiful Joe by Marshall Saunders -- it's old (you can get it on the Guttenberg Project website if you want)  -- pub about 1876.  It's hard to read at first because Joe's owner was such an abuser.  It was the beginnings of "rescue".  Truly a classic.

If you haven't read it, Merle's Door.  It is my all time favorite.

Right now I'm reading Karen Pryor's Reaching the Animal Mind.  It's about dogs and other animals, too, including us!  Every page is a delight.

One of my all time favorites, if you like the older humorists, is James Thurber's "The Dog Who Bit People."  I have this book in my collection and it's the only book I ever re-read.  It completely cracks me up.  It's about his boyhood dog, which is an Airedale and rather unbalanced. I suppose I find it funny becuase I had an Airedale whlie growing up and he was beyond unbalanced.  He was a stray who I insisted we get from the shelter, against their recommendations, and he was quite the quirky boy.  We loved him, though, just like comes through in Thurber's book.  It is just a short story, too.

For classics, there are the Sunnybank farms stories about collies (Lad: A Dog, Grey Dawn, Wolf) by Albert Payson Terhune.

    I second this. Loved it!

I also loved  A Walk Across America by Peter Jenkins. Not really 100% about a dog, but a really good book.

    Re: Books?

I have a huge list that I keep here about what dog books I've read.

    Some of my favourites memoirs:

Mark Doty: Dog Years: A Memoir
Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff: Amazing Gracie: A Dog's Tale
David Kennard: A Shepherd's Watch: Through the seasons with one man and his dogs
David Kennard: The Dogs of Windcutter Down: One Shepherd's Struggle for Survival
Dean Koontz: A Big Little Life: A Memoir of a Joyful Dog

Some of my favourite fictional books:

Merrill Markoe: Walking in Circles Before Lying Down
Merrill Markoe: Nose Down, Eyes Up
    Donald McCaig: Nop's Trials
Garth Stein: The Art of Racing in the Rain

    And wolves?  Love them too.

Dorothy Hearst: Promise of the Wolves

There are some others on the list that I really enjoyed and some that I thought were good but not considered to be my favourites.

    Re: Books?

Lots of them I'd reccomend are already listed here- like Art of Racing in the Rain is right now my favorite dog-related fiction story. Nose down/eyes up and Turning in Circles Before Lying Down are great too. I really like books that take it from the dogs' point of view

One that I also like is called "the dogs of babel" it's really sad, but it's an amazing story. If you like the CSI type of stories, it's good. This man's wife is murdered and the dog is the only witness.

    Re: Books?

Thanks everyone! I'm going to be busy with my wish list today lol

I've heard of Dogs of Babel and i THINK i have it already on my list. i know the title and plot is familiar.

Peter Jenkins is just a cool writer. i read Walk Across American in high school and it was thought provoking to say the least. and i cried when he buried Cooper. But he has another book, Looking for Alaska that is in my To Be Read pile. i saw it at the library but havent been back to get it. i will one day though!

Last night i was looking at my library (yes MY library lol) and i noticed that i have a lot of reference books, a lot of how to books,, dog encyclopedias and training guides and breed specific books(bulldogs, GSD, Akita, JRT) a few art books, fictional adventures/romance, urban fantasies, horse books of various topics(fiction/training/memoirs)...... and yet..... very few dog related books in the fiction/biography realm! I have Jack Lond's collection, Faithful Ruslan(very sad!! i dare you to read it!) and Thor, ..    I figured i should rectify that oversight and try to get more books about my favourite subject.

I bought two new books recently about hunting hounds... one is a sickening display of no imagination and almost copies Where the Red Fern Grows to the letter.. only its one hound instead of two. i couldnt finish it.... its called the Wire Fence.. and the other is On Coon Mountain. i havent finished it yet either(in the process of reading) but the authors humour is pretty quirky. the first three pages had me laughing at the irony of his birth. but the time frame is during the depression.

Thanks again everyone! keep posting if have any more!

Moving Pictures by Terry Pratchett - I just love the dog character (Gaspode) in this book.
