    Belly Bands? (outdoorschik)

Do they work? I've got a 14 year old retired sled dog Austin, that i have inside ... he is likely not going to learn not to mark. Would a belly band be a reliable/workable solution? Have you used them? How was it?

I've heard of them used but I dont think it will teach him to stop if thats what you're looking for. But, since he is 14 and if you aren't looking to teach him not to then yes a belly band should protect your furniture.

A belly band wouldn't be a permanent fix such that he won't mark without it, but generally dogs (with brains!!) who mark once or twice don't like the sensation of urinating on themselves, and will learn not to life their leg once they are wearing it.

I've been thinking of getting one for Zipper....he doesn't have any real issues here but when he goes to my parents' he gets a strong urge to mark because of the houseful of intact females...and being a stud dog there's little training in the world that will stop that urge, nor would I expect it to, as it's a natural, normal behaviour for an experienced intact male.

He is neutered ... I'm looking at using it as part of my training. Not to substitute for supervision and a stern NO and immediate outside for him when he does do it. It's just that he lifts his leg so fast :) I can't be yanking him around by his collar at all either so the x-back harness he wears makes it difficult to give a tug & verbal interupt, and an immediate outside we go. The leash attaches to the back so as he pulls forward, i'm pulling in reverse which confuses him and nearly knocks him over he's so off-balance lol. If he's to be an inside dog, which he should be, he needs to learn ... this is going to be difficult. I see quite a bit of senility right now and he's walking into corners ... so I don't hold out high hope for training unless this is just the side effects of the meds.

Well, I would put a diaper in there, because he's probably a good sized boy, but yes, they do save the floor and furniture. Jewel is going to be in fulltime panties, when I can find some that don't slide off of her skinny butt. Teaching is great, but when you've got a senior dog that hasn't been taught, there's some management involved, tooWink

Carmy needs pampers, too.  Or she will NEVER go visiting with me!  If people come over I have to tell them to greet/pet her on the linoleum!  She's a piddler!  It's her personality.  Embarrassed

My minpin is 13 years old and has always marked indoors, the tird. He was neutered at 9mos old. He has always been very dominant so I suppose this is his way of claiming what he thinks is his. Gobie now always wears a "pee-shirt" which is a vest with a belly band, since standard wrap-around belly bands he can slide right off his slick butt. I slack off every now again and ALWAYS regret it. So he's been wearing his pee shirt all the time indoors for a few weeks now. The second day the poise pad (disposable and self-stick) was wet and he had walked around wet for a few hours. He has not peed in it since. So I agree once they figure out that 1. they are wet (with pee nonetheless, ick) and 2. didn't get the object of their desire wet, then they don't mark so long as the belly band is on. it's pretty much saved my sanity and my furniture/carpet. he is also crated whenever we leave the house and overnight with the bellyband off so his parts can have some "air" LOL.

Brutus marked once the first time that he came into our house.  I immediately engineered a diaper around his midsection.  He attempted to lift his leg two more times, & was visibly shaken that he had peed himself.  He hasn't tried lifting in a house since them.  He was an intact, 6-7 year old, male at the time.  He's not exactly what I would consider a bright dog.  Actually, he's very sweet, but he's pretty dumb.  If he could make the association that quickly, I think that is a chance that Austin will "get it" as well.

Where do y'all recommend getting a belly band? Any brand recommendations?

Nemo wasn't housetrained when I got him.  We got that taken care of rather quickly, but he's a marker too.  I wanted to take him to work with me and couldn't take a chance he'd make a mistake or mark in the office so I ordered some belly bands that looked like a giant ace bandage.  They worked but I didn't care for the shape.  I found a lady on ebay who made them to order. Her's were shaped more to my liking.  The belly area is sort of egg shaped and stuffed with batting and has two smallish straps with velcro that go up around the back.  The less velcor with a long haired dog, the better.  If we are going into someone's home I put one on just to remind him of the rules.  Pretty much the only time they get wet is when I forget to take it off when we go outside.

My oldest male Charlie is a marker.  Especially when I take him out to new places.  Sounds like a belly band might be worth a try for him.  Once in a while he'll mark inside but I think he doesn't realize what he's doing cause a little squirt will come out and then he suddenly remembers he's not allowed to inside.  Other houses are a whole other story though.
