    Good vibes for Kenya

Kenya is not feeling well.  She OD'd on a very heavy duty prescription drug and has vomited 7 times.  She has been cleared by the vet but still feels yucky.

    Re: Good vibes for Kenya

She seems OK, just tired looking.  She ate up to 7 pills (that's how many were left in this bottle).  Kenya weighs 50lbs and DH weighs over 200lbs.  The dose of one pill is a dose that DH had to work up to.  The vets and techs did a LOT of research for us.  The vet seems pretty unconcerned about any serious or long term effects, other than possible sickness and odd mood changes over then next 48 hours.  This drug isn't really used with dogs, there is very little information on its effects so a lot of the evidence is anecdotal.  He said she is better off home with me, since she gets stressed out without me and there is no one on staff overnight at the hospital.  I can call a neurologist at the emergency vet if anything happens.

We both feel so terrible but this is so crazy.  She has always been free in the house.  She somehow found DH's toiletry case, pulled it down, got inside, pulled out a pill bottle, and chewed the bottle and pills.  If she can do that she could easily get in the fridge!  She's coming with me to work tomorrow and I will crate her from now on.  It's just not worth it.  Even if the dogs are fine for months, there's always that one thing like this that happens while you are not there...

    Re: Good vibes for Kenya

Oh my gosh, I'm glad she is okay!!

There is something to be said for this though. I can't get over how much Shimmer sounds like your Kenya, every time you talk about her. They sound like they could be litter sisters. Shimmer could be fine for months on end, and then one day have something that triggers her stress threshold, and BOOM, something gets eaten. The last time that happened, she put her own life in danger by eating not only half a lamp, but she also ate the lightbulb. I came home to find vomit all over the floor, a shivering Shimmer curled up in a blanket, and when I saw her vomit broken glass on the floor, as we drove to the e-vet I made the decision then and there that it was never worth the risk again to let her have free access to things when I am not home. It's not about training anymore, it's about safety and my ego is not big enough to believe that her personality can be "trained" out of her. And frankly, I don't care, it's still not worth the risk involved in leaving her alone with freedom to make very poor decisions. So she has a wonderful large kennel, in which she loves, that she is in whenever we are not at home.

She is not destructive by nature, but every once in awhile something will trigger a stress response, and she chews and eats things to resolve that stress. Well, it's not worth a dead dog to me, and I'm sure Kenya will become well accustomed to her kennel environment for when you are not home.

Rest easy Kenya, and get better silly girl!!

    Re: Good vibes for Kenya

Kim, this is a new behavior for Kenya but could very well be related to her anxiety and neurotic tendencies.  It is very odd to me since she has never, ever been a counter surfer or chewed things other than the Nylabone.  Just this past week, she has chewed something plastic each day.  The first two days, she took a plastic food container out of the sink.  Fair enough, they were dirty with food.  Then the other night she took a CD case and chewed it in front of me.  Last night she took a lid I use for target training and tried to chew that!  So this morning, I made dang sure there were NO plastic objects she could reach.  I guess that was bad in hindsight, she went through all the trouble to find this plastic bill bottle and chew it to bits.

These neurotic behaviors in her sort of come and go.  If it's not one thing, it's another.  She used to submissive pee (like several times a day).  Then she switched to spinning.  Now she is devouring anything plastic....

So this past weekend we were travelling for a funeral.  Different routine and environment for her.  Nothing particularly stressful happened during that time, but who knows.  Whenever there is something like that, she seems to switch her behavior to something else.

Been there many times with abbie: razor blades, migraine meds, hand warmers, just to name a few. She eats the strangest things. She's pulled through every time though. I'm sure kenya will be feeling much better tomorrow. Sounds like have a good vet. That's so important with dogs like this

Oh no!  So glad she appears to be OK.  The money spent on a nice, cushy, large kennel (if you don't have one already) will be well worth it.  Good vibes to all !

This is what she ate, 1400mg at most: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamotrigine

My concern is the skin rash that is well document with humans.  This is why humans have to ween onto the drug.  The vet could not find any evidence of this in dogs, but he's never seen a dog take this medicine (even as a prescription for the dog).

He said we did not have to check her liver levels since he would bet they'd be all out of whack right now anyway, and there's really nothing else we can do.  He said the drug is not "toxic" and even if her liver is stressed for a while, it will regenerate.

    Re: Good vibes for Kenya

You may want to give her some milk thistle over the next few weeks.  Mostly research the human side effects and find out what organs it may be a problem with.  But typically it's the liver that takes the biggest hit.  Milk thistle is easy to obtain and will help her body detox.  It will take a while but it's easily done.

She may just plain be happier crated -- less "decsions" to make overall and it may create that safe environment she may need.
