    Maggie was attacked!

We are all trying to relax after a horrible evening. Our little Maggie was attacked by a german shepherd. We always walk around our street in the evenings with the dogs. Well this evening, we came up and around for a second time, and I always keep an eye out for dogs. Well, there was a german shepherd out with the owner (I'm assuming, a young kid) and I seen him trying to get the dog into the house. I pulled Teddi closer to me since I figured he would come after Teddi if he did come running up onto the street. My husband did not see this dog out, he was walking Maggie and I didn't think the dog would come charging at us like it did. Sure enough, the dog comes flying at us, right after little Maggie. By the time I yelled, the dog had Maggie around the neck. Hubby was trying so hard to get her, and I (18 weeks pregnant) dove onto the german shepherd to grab him, closed my eyes and ended up on the ground. Finally after what seemed like forever, the owner came running out, and an older guy came out too. Maggie was screaming so loud, even after the fact that I thought for sure she had something wrong with her, it's a dark street and she's all black, so we ran to where there was light to see. In the meantime I ran Teddi 2 doors down to a friends house (who owns 3 shepherds) and she ran up to check on Maggie. Needless to say Maggie is completely unharmed. I have no idea how, but I am thanking god right now. I however, started having awful back pains and what I thought were mild contractions, but the on call doctor said as long as there's no bleeding I should be fine..so now I have to keep a heating pad on my back and rest. I haven't felt the baby kick yet so I'm taking the doctor's advice and praying it's alright.

We called our boroughs PD and they said that there were no cop cars at the building and to call back tomorrow. AC was closed, so I of course called 911. After making a report, 10 mins. later hubby got a call that a cop would be out tomorrow so we can file a report. I am going to have to take a day off work Unpaid now to wait on this cop and probably animal control, which is something we can't afford at the moment. I'm trying not to get stressed out, especially that Maggie is ok, but what an awful experience. I am SICK of these idiots around here w/ their aggressive dogs off leash all the time!

I'm thinking about typing up a letter and dropping it at everyone's doors around the neighborhood warning them of this house if they walk their dogs because our dog was attacked, completely unprovoked.

How upsetting!  Try to put it out of your mind and relax.  I know I'd spend the rest of the evening with a certain pup in my lap, what little lap you have. :)

I'm with you about off-the-leash dogs.

Wow, how scary. I'm glad Maggie is ok. You might want to get her checked out by a vet just in case there's internal injuries.

Have you had any Braxton-Hicks contractions yet? It's where your belly/uterus will feel really tight and hard. With my first pregnancy, I started getting them around 20 weeks. With my second, I think it was just past 16 weeks. It's normal to get them occasionally, but if you are getting more than 4/hour, you need to call your doctor. Don't panic though. When I was in a car accident, I was getting them like every 5 minutes. I had to stay in the hospital overnight to be monitored, but everything ended up ok. ((hugs))

I'm so sorry that this happened..... its scary and sad.  Darn these dogs...its so easy for this to happen and does so often.  It seems that the boy was trying to get his dog in before he got himself in trouble and was unable....been there and done that.  And been on the recieving end also.....darn these dogs.

BUT....step back and only think about the fact that she was unharmed and is fine...because really that is what is important.

    Re: Maggie was attacked!

Oh my gosh!  I am SO sorry to hear that!  What a scary thing to happen!  Luckily in our neighborhood my dogs seem to be the biggest (although definitely not the baddest! LOL!), we have mainly smaller dogs that have run and snapped at us (a dachshund, yorkie, and a lhasa apso (sp??)) and they have only snapped and lunged, but never made contact.  My pitbulls have cowered and hid behind me to protect them! LOL!

The best advice I can give, although you definitely do not need advice, is to make sure to speak with the owners of the dog.  Often times children should not be watching dogs, and it would be nice to speak with the parents, and perhaps to find out if this has happened before.  If it is the first time, I can only say that working in a shelter I have seen many very nice family pets put to sleep because they had one slip up. Often times just speaking with them will lead them to getting a fence, or changing their ways.  I grew up with Border Collies who were very sweet, but if I owned one in town most likely would have been territorial...luckily we were on a farm.

I'm in no way saying that it was alright what happened, but before someone handed out fliers to neighbors about my dog, I would hope they would talk to me first.....I own pitbulls and completely understand how important it is to keep dogs under control and train them, but if my dogs ever scare someone I am the first one there to apologize and talk it over, and introduce my dogs.  Mine look scary, but are actually afraid of their own shadows!  Perhaps the situation the Shepard was in was not a good one (the boy not having control)?  Just an idea.

But it's wonderful to hear that Maggie is okay, and safely sleeping in bed with her mommy and daddy!  I hope that the owners of that dog take responsiblity and make sure it does not happen again.

    Re: Maggie was attacked!

I dont know what to do today. On one hand it was one incident with this dog in the whole time we have walked our dogs. On the other hand I would never forgive myself if it happened again but this time injured one of my dogs. By young kid I meant 20 something, and we did speak to the owners afterward, they just said "your dog is fine". So maybe if we received a sincere apology and a we will make sure this doesn't happen again, but we didn't get that. We had my friend thoroughly check her out. She's eating and acting normal, and her poop is hard. We always checked her belly. The dog only went for her neck and thankfully didn't even get a bite on her, no bitemarks, no blood. I feel horrible and have very conflicting feelings on how to handle this situation

Jano my belly was hard while I was having those pains so I bet that's what it was. I have backpains today but no stomach pains thankfully

    Re: Maggie was attacked!

Wow, that really sucks.  Try not to stress, its bad for the baby, we all know that.  But also the tension will make your back ache more, which in turn will cause more stress, then more tension, more back ache....ya big bad circle.

Hopefully these people learned something about having their dog off leash.  Some people do learn eventually.

    Re: Maggie was attacked!

Always report every incident. That is the only way that AC and Law Enforcement can build a history file on vicious and dangerous dogs. Even if you do talk with the owner of the other dog (whether friendly or not), report the incident.

We have actually had AC remove dogs from owners who have repeatedly allowed their dogs to run free that have harassed/attacked my wifes Guide. It was only due to the history file from the reports we made that allowed them to determine the proper course of action.

Our thoughts are with you and glad your dog (and you) are ok.

I understand what you are saying exactly!   I guess for me...having a very very big dog......and a dog that a lot of people ( if not most ) would be afraid of......and a dog that can outrun me if they get out of the door......   its a tough situation.  It scared you to death.... and I would be too. We want to say "bad dog" and make sure it never happens again.   BUT...dogs are dogs and none of us know what our dogs are going to do ever.  Some THINK they know more than others......but no one knows for sure what their dog will do at all times.  As the person said above ( darn the way this forum is set up that I can't just go back and look to see who that poster was ) they see many nice family dogs put down because of something like this.  I see many nice dogs in our clinic where I work getting reported and the owners upset and scared and hassled by the animal control because of their dog got out by accident.     Its a shame but a fact of life.   And you know...even as a person with a very large dog... I carry a can of spray with me when I take my Danes for a walk....NOT so much because I think they are going to get hurt ( and they sure could get hurt but they are big enough that they have a better chance of nothing serious ) but because I don't want trouble PERIOD. I can't tell you how many people let their dogs out without a leash and they run over to us while we are walking by. The little cockapoos, yorkies, and those kind of dogs are always charging us...barking and starting crap all the time. Most of the time the owners think its funny that their little dog is not afraid of my big one....they don't understand that my big one IS afraid of their little one...and if he decides to defend himself a mere smack at the side of the head with his big paw could send their little dog sailing.......and who will get into trouble????? MY BIG DOG!  So I must protect Gibby from getting into any kind of trouble.   People don't realize that all dogs might protect their territory.

    Re: Maggie was attacked!

Well in this case my husband took over. The dog warden called him yesterday and he told the story. They said they were going over to check tags and shot records. The warden said we can press charges (um, we aren't) and they will pay if Maggie needs to see a vet. Funny I have no sympathy for these people. My friend who lives two doors down from them said the dog is not friendly and they let him off leash ALL the time. Be responsible. Unless this isn't a first incident I'm sure they will fined but I'm done with it. I'm not afraid of big dogs but seeing one grab your small dog while she yells helpless is something I never want to relive again

I hear ya..... years ago when my boys were young a very large  Alaskan Malamute got out of a neighbors front door and attacked my 35 lb. pitbul mix Sammy....picked her up by the neck and shook her all over the place.... his owner was right behind trying to get him off...punched him so hard that his wrist watch flew off. I got bit also,  but only because I put my hand on his face to stop him. Sammy went to ER where the vet said he missed her jugler vein by just a hair.   The owners paid for the vet bill...but then later complained to us that their dog had been sick ever since it happened....as though my dog made theirs sick!
