I booby-trapped the kitchen this morning

I'm getting tired of the girls (Abbie and Lily) constantly getting up on the counter to see what's there. Yep, my fault - I'm a very poor house keeper and frequently leave stuff on the counters. Abbie, though, gets in to drugs too so that's my immediate concern.

So, I bought 4 mouse traps last night and placed them along the counter this morning then put some natural balance way back on the counter top. Lily was smart enough to sniff around the traps. I thought Abbie was going to avoid them too but she sniffed the trap, then sniffed it again - BAM. She ran out of that kitchen so fast, her butt was on fire. I highly doubt she'll be going in the kitchen again after today.

     Now for lily......

Am I a bad person for thinking this sounds like good entertainment?  Not that I'd set it up just for the sake of seeing them snap.  But if it was set up for necessary reasons, it'd be fun to watch them try and figure it out.

I don't have any food counter surfers of the canine variety but my cat likes to walk all over the kitchen counters when we are gone.  I sometimes put cookie sheets balanced right on the edges but since they are always on the floor and cat hair is all over the counters, it must not be that scary for my cat. Belle has started looking on top of dressers and bookshelves and desks for toys ever since she found a stuffy I had placed on a dresser.  That one time success was a strong enough reward to keep her checking. lol

Mouse traps?  Maybe you would be better off with Snappy Trainers instead.  More expensive, same effect, *but* they are made to avoid catching a dog's paw.

Very good point. I am watching them though from around the corner. During the day they are crated.

Re: I booby-trapped the kitchen this morning

I scared Tink out of her puppy toenails this morning.  Long story made short because of the psoriasis I battle I have to slather my feet with vaselline and wear special socks to keep it 'on' so when I get out of bed I have to step into a pair of Crocs in order to walk and not break my neck.

But of course dogs LOVE vaselline.  It is somehow completely irresistible to them.  Particularly to Tink.  And suddenly (after a whole year plus) NOW she's decided to snag my Crocs during the night.  It's more than just "expensive" -- I literally HAVE to have those exactly where I can put my feet into them in order TO walk.

this has been going on for a few days ... with me trying to gently get her to leave them alone.

Last night I'd just gotten to sleep and I heard something that penetrated my brain.  I leaned over and saw Tink UP TO HER EYEBROWS in my Croc.   (let's all say "ewwwwwww") I was half asleep and I hollered "TINK-ER-BELL" way louder than I intended to.

She was around the bed BEFORE she hit the ground and last I saw her she was doing the "Pug-tona" racing for the safety of Daddy's knees.  But my Crocs were in place this morning.

Unfortunately that's what happens when you wake Mom up.  At 3:30 a.m. I am not gracious nor thinking about positive reinforcement.  *sigh*

I think I need some snappy trainers. I'd seriously considered applying a Scat Mat (because real mouse traps scare me, with my toy-sized, hare-footed dogs) to the side of the trash can, and one to the food bin. Snappy trainers might be as effective, without shocking them.

Lily set off 3 traps today and still hasn't learned. She's pretty hard headed. I'm going to have to try a different approach with her.

Abbie learned on the first one!

Re: I booby-trapped the kitchen this morning

What if you tried some double sided tape all along the edges? Dogs tend to HATE having tape stuck to them....and you don't want something like duct tape that will get ingrained in hair, but something that will stick to their pads when they jump up?

We tried this one on Max once, but we went all out on him. We put the traps down on duct tape. He grabbed the edge, dumped them on the floor, and let them all snap. Then he ran up and snatched the prize. He was way too smart.

Aaahhh....sorry, but I can't buy into mouse traps under any circumstances.  What if a toe gets broken or an ear gets caught or...or...or...???  It would be preferable to improve your house keeping if housekeeping is the problem...just put the food away.  Regarding drugs....try putting the drugs into sealed containers.

I put the traps in heavy ziplock bags to make sure no one gets hurt, including my kids and husband.   They are a little tricky to set.
