Please, please help me! (It's for Cuddles) UPDATE!!!!

My cocker Spaniel Cuddles who is seven years old and my Newfoundland/Black Lab mix got into a tiny fight. They both had squeaky toys and were happily chewing away. Well, Cuddles went to a different room and left hers there. She came back in and decided she wanted Lion's toy that was currently in his mouth. Neither dog is agressive but Cuddles went to grab for the toy. He didnt want her to have it so all he did was turn his head away. Her teeth were still coming though. She accidently bit him on the face under his eye. He was scared and suprised by it so his teeth went all the around her neck. He let go within a second but one or two of his teeth had broken the skin.

At Lion's vet appointment earlier in the year our vet had said he needed a teeth cleaning. So, he was scheduled to go in for a teeth cleaning next week. We are thinking the tooth that broke the skin had some bacteria on it, and now Cuddles' shoulder is very swelled up and hard. It feels like a bubble filled with liquid. And there's a smaller spot like that on her neck. The vets is closed and we cant take her till tommorow anyway. What can I do? Please help!

I'm just sick with worry now.

How long ago did this happen?  If its swelling immediately, I'd think about an E-vet now.

What did you do when it first happened?  What did  you use to clean it?

Just going to add, that if it didn't just happen, I think waiting till morning is ok.  Cuddles will likely need an antibiotic for the infection.  Keep the wound as clean as possible, and as dry as possible.

With the bite and the scratch I've dealt with, the scratch was the one that ended up becoming infected.  It did the same thing, swole up, got hard and was very warm to the touch.  We got antibiotics for it.  Mind you that was my daughter, not my dog...I'd assume they are much the same though.

When did this happen ? Are the bite areas oozing in any way ? Clear fluid ? Bloodish ?  Is there any way you could take Cuddles' temperature ?

If it happened several days ago, it sounds like an infection and you will probably need antibiotics. If it is very recent and not oozing, icing the area could help with the swelling. If it is a day or more old and oozing, warm compresses (perhaps soaked in epsom salt) could help drain the fluid out and relieve the pressure under the skin. If it is an open wound, it needs to be disinfected too. Those are the only things I can think of but honestly taking her to the e-vet would be best if at all possible.

It happened a couple days ago but the swelling just happened tonight! I will wait till morning, but I'm just so worried for her.

It's probably an abscess.  If she's feeling ok otherwise, don't stress to much about it & get her checked in the morning.  The vet will probably clip around it, & may or may not lance it so that it will drain.  She'll also be started on antibiotics.

You might want to keep her somewhere that, if it ruptures, won't ruin anything.  ie..couch, carpet, ect.

That's great advice, because they can rupture. If it does, try not to freak out; it's not as bad as it looks. Good luck and keep us updated.

Until you get to the vet, you can apply moist warm compresses to the area, but be gentle, because abscesses can hurt.  If it is an abscess, the vet will probably lance it, flush the wound and then put her on antibiotics.

Well, the abcess ruptured at home. Ohh, the blood. I almost threw up but I managed to not freak out. We took her to the vet and she is on pain meds and antibiotics. She's getting special treatment and will be just fine :)

I would just like to say, thank-you soo much for preparing me for it to rupture. I had no idea it would and if you wouldnt have told me not to freak out who knows what would've happened. So, thanks guys!

It is pretty yucky when that happens. Ick!  The good news is that it relieves a lot of the pain when it does rupture.

For future reference, it's always safer to let dogs have "special things" (bones, pig ears, rawhides, squeak toys, stuffie toys) separately in their own rooms or crates.  Even with the best of doggy friends, tiffs can happen, and now that you know your dogs will puncture to make a point, better safe than sorry.

Re: Please, please help me! (It's for Cuddles)

Many years ago, the left side of Jessie's head swelled severely. We took her to the E-vet and he inserted a needle into the swollen area and found some pus. We were told there was a 50% chance it would rupture and if it did, not to panic but just clean the area and take her to our vet in the morning. Luckily it didn't rupture; I don't know if I would have been as calm as you were. You did a great job of taking care of Cuddle and I'm glad she's going to be okay.
