meeko1030:
We've only had him for three days, the previous owner owned him for 6 weeks and never bothered to housebreak him. He was kept in a crate and went on a wee wee pad. I would just like him to go poop within an hour of eating this way he can roam around the house and we can play with him without worrying about accidents.
Um -- I have to ask -- where on earth did you read that a dog is supposed to poop within an hour of eating??
I hate to tell you -- but they ALL have their own schedule -- you have to *train* this and get to know each animal. Some dogs may poop once a day -- some may poop three or four times a day. Try and manipulate that with particular foods, etc. and you're doomed to fail. (a food with too little bulk and a small dog like a pom will have anal gland issues in a heartbeat among other things).
I just fear that the "instruction booklet" you seem to be referring to is likely gonna drop you on your head. He won't settle down to a schedule for MONTHS and if he's never actually been housetrained it will be a challenge. It's not just eating that triggers elmination (pee or poop) -- it's **exercise**, water, schedule, and the whole day's activity. Not just a certain amount of time after eating.
I'm truly not trying to be snarky -- it's usually only an old dog who may function by the clock -- and I have a 19 year old peke -- trust me -- her clock has it's own quirks. Sometimes the batteries work ... sometimes *not*. *grin*
But after only 3 days? Gosh -- I've known dogs who wouldn't poop for longer than that after getting to a new home. It's a big huge change!
Meeko is absolutely adorable. Let us get to know you a bit more -- have you had dogs before? Is this your first pom? We're glad to help -- I just don't want you to walk into this with the wrong expectations. It's just not something you can set your clock by.
