120lb pit bull? Possible? (Interesting TV special) People really don't know what a Pit Bull is do they?

Now I know the standard for the American Pit Bull Terrier is somewhere between 30 and 60lbs. They aren't a large dog.

Now we were watching a special on the history channel about in North Carolina one of their myths about a creature that has been killing animals for a long time.

Most recently the creature returned and killed some pit bulls. (Sadly these dogs were outside on a chain and didn't stand a chance).

Anyways the creature was cat like and they started thinking Bob Cat. (As an NC native I can tell you NC is full of bob cats)

The funny thing was the question they asked before commercial....

"IF THE PREDATOR WAS INDEED A BOB CAT COULD IT REALLY TAKE DOWN A 120LB PIT BULL?"

And I couldn't help but think to myself: "SURE IT WOULD BE EASY BECAUSE IF THE PIT BULL WAS 120LBS IT PROBABLY WAS ON ITS WAY TO HAVING A MASSIVE HEART ATTACK FROM BEING SO OBESE"
It just kind of confirmed to me that most people are clueless about what the american pit bull terrier and american staffordshire terrier are really supposed to look like, be like. You know.

No wonder there are so many so called "Pit Bull" attacks. Nobody knows what they are.

I just kind of thought it was funny.

And they did discover what the animal was that was killing the pits, other dogs and livestock. It was a cougar which was thought to have left    the area 100 years ago (but there are so much mountains and woods there that there really is no way to determine that they really are gone)

I like Pit bulls, and it was an interesting special but I have to say the emphasis on the Pit bull throughout the whole thing about them being big tough dogs that shouldn't be able to be taken down by anything, kind of bothered me.       They need our protection just as much as the next dog, if not more so

It truly is sad how uninformed and misguided the general public is regarding pit bulls.  Do attacks happen?  Of course they do, but then any breed can and has attacked.

Your mention of "nobody knows what they are" reminds me of that online quiz where you look at 25 or so pictures to pick out the Pibble.  Even for someone who is relatively dog savvy, it's hard!

I agree I sometimes have a hard time with those quizzes as well.   It takes a very well trained eye at times

I love bully breeds. My next dog will hopfully be a rescue APBT, or at least some type of bully.

Pit bull isnt really a breed, its more of a term used to discribe a group of dogs. It was origionaly just referring to the APBT, but now it seems to cover any bully type dog, APBT, AST, SBT, American bulldog, Am Bully, and even bull terriers. In most cases today, when you hear the word "pit bull" it is hardly ever referring to a dog that actually is a true American pit bull terrier. Most people only know a "pit bull" as a muscular dog, with a big head and chest, and a very short coat. Its sad to see all these ghetto kids walking around with a huge fat Am Bully (aka "pit bull") on a chain...  I have no problem with any other breeds of bullys, but i really hate that they are all just dumped into a single category, because this is how the breed has gotten its bad repuation. A lot of these "Pit bulls" that attack, are usually not REAL APBTs, they are an Am bully, or bulldog mastiff or Am bully mix that is un socialized and chained in a backyard its whole life. And its the dogs that are true APBTs and their owners that suffer, when their dogs are blamed simply because the breeds look similar.

LOL I watched that stupid show too. They showed pics of the pit bull and it looked like a normal pit bull to me. Didn't look much past 60 lbs.

I agree that dog was no bigger than 60lbs that they kept showing but ofcourse the dog they exhumed who knows how big it was.    I just thought that was rediculous stating that the persons pit bull terrier was 120lbs.  I'm sure that was an exaggeration for the show but my gosh, way to go misleading people.   I mean maybe the dog was 120lbs, if it was it sure wasn't an APBT, or AM STAFF, or SBT.

I'm just glad Aspen's no more than 120 lbs. *G* I'll stick with a 40-45 lb Staffy any day. Ha ha. Although I'm sure he'll muscle out to more than that...he's still growing. Stick out tongue

First quiz took 2 tries, second quiz took 1 try.    Those are both ones I've seen before but they really show you how many dogs can be mistaken for the breed

So, you know there are no American Pitbulls on this site? Smile  If i am mistaken so be it, but I don't think so....

On the other sites it was not the heads that were obvious, it was the butts; in this site it was the heads.
