    stray dog

This last Sunday a stray dog, we know its part rottweiler and think its part boxer, came wandering around our house. He can't be older and 6 months, and hes been sleeping on our porch. He has no collar and we live pretty close to the country so we think that his previous owners abandoned him out here and he may have possibly been beaten because he is really skiddish and runs away when we try to get closer to him, but he keeps coming right back. We leave him water and food, and I lay some treats out for him. I don't want to run him off, just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to get him to trust us and not to be scared of us.

We live in the country also and people are always dumping their dogs in our area.  It is so sad.  The latest one, a Lab,  did this same thing to an older couple near us.  She did just like you are.  She kept food and water out, put an old blanket on the porch.  He kept hanging around.  He was older than yours is finally they picked a name for him....Duke.... and started talking to him calling his new name.  Started bringing out treats and calling him by his new name.  Now he is just the most wonderful neighborhood dog....so friendly they just love him to death.  It didnt take him too long to warm up but she has had dogs most of her life and she is very confident and comanding.  The dogs really mind her, even mine and all the other neighborhood dogs, dont know if Duke was getting her stong vibes or not but he is a great dog.

Try cutting down the amount of food you are providing.  Offer food only when you are present.  If he runs off leave a small amount and keep trying.  He will hopefully make the association that you = food and this should help him overcome his fear.  Sit down outside near him but not too close and toss food toward him.  Tasty food, not just dog kibble.  Don't make direct eye contact and keep your voice calm and soft.

Ty for the advice, my mom was outside talking on the phone this morning and he came up to her and let her start to pet him. Now hes fine with all of us and is a great dog for being so young. He doesn't really chew, he loves being pet lol. The only problem that he seems to have is he jumps up when my mom goes out and sees him.

I would not assume that he was abandoned and make sure the police, dog warden and even post on Craig's list that you have a found dog.  The owners maybe looking for him - you never know the circumstances behind him being there.  My MIL lost her dog on vacation once, it was so hard but they finally located him thanks to someone reporting him found.
