    Winter Boots

Ok, after Ari broke my heart last winter on those bitterly cold days she couldn't bear to walk outside (it hurt her feet so much she just wanted to curl up on the ground and whimpered up at me), I'm going to invest in some boots for her. My first question is what brand would you recommend? I was looking at the Muttluks but am open to any recommendations.  Secondly, what is a good way to acclimate a dog to them? Ari is, ahem, not the most cooperative beast about certain things and I suspect she's not going to be too keen on these things. I plan on setting aside super yummy things to try to make the association of good food with them, but what else could I do to make this as painless as possible for all parties involved?

    Re: Winter Boots

We have Ruff Wear Grip Trex boots.  The oldest pair are almost six years old & still holding up well.  (Granted, we use them for hiking & swimming, not in snow.)

I just put them on, & start the celebration.  They get rewarded for standing up, rewarded for walking around, & rewarded for looking or coming to me after I call them to distract them from trying to remove their boots. Then, I usually try to play some kind of game with them to get them moving in their new boots.  Fetch usually takes their minds off their feet. :)

Oooh I'll have to check out that brand. They sound durable. We can definitely do the throw a party routine. Ari will LOOVE that. Anytime we get real excited, she gets super happy (butt wiggles and all). I didn't even think of that, heck it's how we house trained her.  I felt like such an AWFUL owner last winter. We had some brutally cold days and she cried when she stepped outside. This coming from the same dog who can run charging full tilt into an unmovable object, bounce off of it and keep going (Ari is not graceful, in the slightest). So, if she is crying it's gotta be hurting her something fierce. And, at nearly 60 lbs. no way am I carrying her!

We have had good luck with the Pawz dog boots------form fitting and so there's not any of that "stumbling" associated with some other boots.  Worked great last winter and we had a TON of snow.

    Totally recomend this site

Baily has two sets.  They polar fleece and are only $2.50 per boot, stay on despite the craziness, protect his pads from the ice and cold temps.  That's the only part of him that is affected by the cold.  I do need to order a new set because he wore a few small holes in a couple.   I've tried a couple others with him and these are THE BEST !

Musher's Secret, Musher's wax, and keep the coat short between the pads. She can handle the cold, but the freezing furballs are what will get her. PS ... you don't need expensive booties if you can't swing it. Dogbooties.com are where we get ours for the sled dogs (less than a dollar each, if you want I can send you some if you can't buy them in small orders, pm me). We buy them in multiples of 1,000

PS - Know anyone local near you who might want to run sled dogs for tourists with me this winter? We're still hiring and need more staff!

I wish I could spend the winter running tourists! That's a great way to spend the cold snowy months.

I just picked up a pair in town for Luke this afternoon, I'm not sure what the brand was, but I paid about $4.00 for them because they were on clearance.

I got the ruffwear boots for lex. When I put them on we just play fetch and he forgets about them. The only issue is that when I put them on his front feet thay strap right across his dew claws and will rub him raw. We have been putting them on his back feet with socks so he still gets used to wearing them though. But besides that they are great! Very durable!
