Holy Cow! My son was hurt on the job this summer (cut finger) and they sent him to the hospital in an ambulance - $140

When DH coached gymnastics, if a kid got hurt they had the option of waiting for their mom to come or calling the ambulance.  Since everyone has different insurance, there's various coverage but most ambulance rides I've heard of cost $1500 or more (something not covered unless you are actually dying).  My friend's grandma had this heart condition and was also losing it mentally so she was always calling the ambulance to take her to the hospital, ringing up thousands in medical bills for her "joyrides" as they called it.

Lies is right on with the ambulance prices ... at least that's what they are here.  When the late DH was sick we took two ambulance rides to Sutter Davis Hospital which is about 5 minutes from home and the rides were $750 each.  The longer one from the hospital here to Kaiser was $1800.  Thank doG Kaiser picked up almost all of it and we only had to pay $50 for each one.

And THAT is why our health insurance is so high.......how in the world do you justify this?

Good question, Dyan.  I wish I knew.  I suppose they have to factor in the life saving equipment that's in the ambulance and the skills of the people involved, but it still seems a little high to me. The distance from my house to the hospital here would be a nice brisk walk.

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

Bringing back this thread just because I came across something on the Internet this morning.   We talked about the fact that a lot of people were being treated for SF but were not really tested... or assume them to have it without really testing......this article shows that when they were testing, very few of the cases they tested were actually SF  but they were told to stop testing since the government already announced we were having an epidemic.

    Here is the article.http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/10/21/cbsnews_investigates/main5404829.shtml

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

I had probable H1N1, but wasn't tested. My doctor said they were only testing a sample of cases, and that everyone with the same symptoms had tested positive. My sister got sick a few days after me, and did test positive for it. So, given that as the case, I am going to hope that it's what I really did have.

Yes...because then you can never get it again.

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

I can honestly say I don't remember the last time I had a flue or a cold.  I used to work at a retirement home when I was younger and it seemed the people who most often got sick were the ones who had the shot.  A friend was just telling me thismorning that the health minister of Finland is claiming that the vaccine can cause cancer.  I haven't checked into this yet so can't verify the validity.

Maybe it's just me but does anyone here know of any politicians that are getting these shots?  Or Obama?  Just curious.

I don't see the need for myself to get the shot.  This body does just fine on it's own without any types of medicine.

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

Too many jumps in logic.  Perhaps more people who get the shot get/seem sick because more people who are already elderly, susceptible to illness, have compromised immune systems, etc are the ones that get the shots and get them routinely?  I've only had one seasonal flu shot ever but my grandma gets them every year.  My grandma is elderly and sickly, shot or not, so I can't blame it on the shot.  The one year I did get it, I got extremely sick with flulike symptoms for five months, but it was not because of the shot, it was something else that coincidentally happened the same year I tried the shot.

We've had several H1N1 clinics here but they still haven't opened it up to everyone yet.  I'm two months over the recommended age so I can't get the shot until they open it up.  When they do I'll be the first one there!
