    Re: H1N1 vaccine

As you can see I am from Ontario as well. I think this whole immunization has been handled very badly. When polls showed that a large number of people were saying they were not going to get the shot, the gov't started a huge campaign to convince people to get the shot. The tragic death of that young boy on top of the dire warnings from the gov't and media threw everyone in to a complete panic. People are lining up, outside in fall rain for 5 hours. When I see all those people on the news I can't help but think, standing in a crowd of hundreds during a flu pandemic is not a great idea. So by tragic luck the gov't got it's wish. We're they ready? No!  They have been telling us since the first wave this was coming. How much time do you need?

    magilacudy:
My concerns are if this is such a pandemic, why are children 6 months to 5 years of age still only a priority?  I would think all children would be a priority after this. They do not want us taking our children to get this shot unless they are in the age bracket or they have asthma.  To me I think my childs health is just as important, and how long will I have to wait until all of the priority cases have their shots first, but that time it could be to late.

All children are a priority but some children are at greater risk. If they just did everyone at the same time, those who are at high risk might end up waiting too long. If you are really that concerned why not just keep them home? They are saying that the epidemic reached it's peak and will start to wean soon. The vaccine takes 2 wks to work. By then it will probably be all but over. Of course that's just what I heard.

    magilacudy:
Another thing I do not understand is if this flu is that severe WHY would they not close the schools?

Because it is not all that sever. If you get H1N1 it does not mean you are going to die. My niece had a confirmed case and she had a sore throat, a fever and achy body for 2 days. It is very rare for anyone, young or old to die of H1N1 without some underlying condition. That's why they do the high risk first.

Last week there were dozens of schools closed around here, as well as childcare centers, activity centers, churches, etc.  The local stations had tickers running across the bottom, similar to what we see during a severe blizzard.

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

They have no policy for the schools here. I know some are reporting 30% absence. Of course it has just hit here recently. We maybe somewhat behind you in that regard. I was listening to an interview with someone from the school board. They were asked if they had hand sanitizing stations in the schools. They said they preferred the kids to wash their hands. When pressed on the practicality of a couple thousand students lining up to wash their hands, they admitted they were concerned about the alcohol content. Kids today! School Boards today!

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

I will not be getting it. I'm in Texas and in college and it appears to be a hotbed of H1N1. I've had two people from my group projects get it and a ton of friends and profs get it. I've been exposed who knows how many times to this flu and other flus and never in my life gotten anything flu-like. I've only had one flu shot when it was forced on me a few years ago. All my friends are fine now after having H1N1 and said for them it was milder than the regular flu. I'm not in a high risk category either and there are not many flu shots available in my area. So nope, not getting it.

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

I do have to question how healthy the "apparently healthy" children who have died were. If it were affecting totally 100% healthy people equally, then all 8 or 11 year old children would be dying from it. But the statistics are still actually quite minimal (I say that in pure statistics terms...I'm sure the parents of those children do not feel that it's minimal in any means, and I in no way mean to make their situation sound any less tragic than it is for them) I imagine there may have been some underlying immune-related problems that could have been totally unknown to anybody.

Unfortunately, there will always be people who die from influenza, pneumonia, and every other disease that exists - vaccination or not. It's unfortunately nature's way of controlling populations, and humans have developed such that they have the frontal lobes to try to alter that population control. But no matter what, some people will still die. It's sad, tragic, because humans have also developed the frontal lobes to analyze emotions and grief, but in the end it's not going to change the fact that humans will never be able to truly control the entire health of the world. The more vaccines that are made, the more antibacterial things that are created, and the more antibiotics are given - the stronger bacteria will become, the more efficient influenza viruses will become, and the more nature will push to continue controlling populations. It comes down to ecology, really.

Same here. My church has a sign posted on the door that if you have signs of illness (coughing, fever, sore throat, body aches) you are not obligated to come to church. They also stopped shaking hands as a sign of peace, stopped the wine cup, and the Priest doesn't place the communion on your tongue.

BUT.......................is this seasonal flu or H1N1?   Or does it matter?  Thats what is getting me.....do we know which flu is which?  What are the symptoms of each?  There are tons of people sick right now.....just look around...but do they know what they have? Each year there are school closings because of flu.........are they closing now because of H1N1...or the regular seasonal flu???  Are they even saying? I mean really, not knowing this is scaring people more than knowing what is going on.

Doesn't matter, it has nothing to do with the supposed "hysteria" or "media hype".  They have preexisting protocol and it's not the first year it's happened.  When X-percent of the student body is out ill, the school closes.  I work for a college and we have the same policy, but have not had to cancel classes because our rate of illness is actually much lower than the rest of the community at the moment.

Around here health officials have been saying loud and clear that it is H1N1.

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

They've stopped really differentiating between the two flus in most places. They're not diagnosing H1N1 in most normal cases, they're simply stating if you have the flu like symptoms then it is called H1N1. So we don't really know if all these cases are really h1n1 or just seasonal flu. Not that it really matters, both are contagious, not too bad for the average person but can be deadly. I do think calling it h1n1 every time though is probably just adding to the hype.

Same here, not really investigating unless you are admitted to the hospital with complications, in which case they'd like to know what they are dealing with.  For the vast majority, it doesn't really matter which one it is, since your basic course of action would be the same (rest, drink water, treat symptoms, stay home).

I see not testing or just calling it all H1N1 as hopefully de-hyping it.  A few weeks ago it seemed like everyone with a sniffle was running off to the ER.

There was something about this on the news last night.  Apparently a lot of people are calling 911 for an ambulance ride to the ER, convinced they're about to croak from h1n1, which is really putting a strain on emergency services.
