    Liesje:

If she was on antibiotics then it was something else.  The seasonal flu vaccine is for a flu virus and antibiotics are for a bacterial infection.  I think this is the type of anecdotal "evidence" that is not appropriate for making the decision about whether to vaccinate or not.

She ( as probably most ) COPD people have problems with secondary infections.... and they are given antibiotics for that reason, not to get rid of the flu.  Point being... she gets the flu shot religiously and gets sick religiously.  Does she get the flu that she was vaccinated against???  How would one know? ....but she gets really sick with flu symptoms each and every year in spite of her flu shot.  I never pin pointed it down to how long later.......

Personally, I wouldn't base my decision on the vaccine on the experience of someone with COPD and chronic secondary infections.  This person has a totally different set of risks, complications, and benefits on either side.  But that's exactly what I mean about people throwing out all this anecdotal evidence.

As far as getting the flu, my understanding is that seasonal flu vaccine uses a dead virus, so no, you don't get flu from the vaccine.  Might get a different strain, or have a totally different problem that has similar symptoms.

Thats not throwing out anecdotal eveidence....thats being real.

No...I certainly am not basing any decisions on my sister...but my point is that its cause for wonder!  I did get the flu vaccine the past two years since I work in the public.... I haven't gotten it yet this year...but I'm pretty well sure that I am not looking at the swine flu vaccine at all.

Anyone following Dr. Mercola website on the flu vaccines?

I just phoned telehealth, I think people should phone them or the clinic doing the vaccines to find out their list of "should not get" the vaccine, apparently there are certain criteria of people that shouldn't get it.  And it is stored in egg, so Derek can't get it because of his allergy

Good advice.  Just to clarify a minor point, most vaccines are "grown" in chicken eggs in order to get sufficient quantities for mass-production.  This also applies to FluMist as well as the injectable.  I do believe there may be a small amount of vaccine produced in other ways, but that would be something to discuss with a doctor, and I'm sure it wouldn't be available early on for H1N1.  I do believe that many, many vaccines are produced in eggs and not just the influenza ones, so keep that in mind.

I think that there is a lot of mis-information going around in the general public, making it sooo tough to figure out what to do.  Each person is different and can react differently to vaccines, just like in dogs.  I would discuss with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

Did a doctor confirm she was getting sick each time from receiving the vaccine?

Seriously...if you look back at what I wrote...I said she gets the flu vaccine each and every year...gets sick with flu like symptoms each and every year in spite of it..... and does she get the flu she was vaccinated against, how would one know???    I never said she was getting sick from receiving it, I said it leaves one to wonder.

    And yes...I wonder.

I know and I'm not trying to pick on you, but this is a good example of how people let all this "wondering" about purely anecdotal evidence sway their decisions about vaccinations and treatment.  I don't know the answer either, but if I really wondered I'd call a doctor and ask.

There's probably a hundred things that can cause flu-like symptoms.  Heck, I get flu-like symptoms every time I get my period (I get a sore throat, runny nose, sometimes low grade fever, and just feel like crap in general).

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

The great thing about this country is we can all make our own informed or misinformed decisions about the vaccines.   I read today that prisoners in Texas will be getting the H1N1 vaccine.   I sure would hate to be a prison guard or work in the infirmary if the flu spread through a place like a prison.  Talk about some bad tempered patients.

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

Dr. Oz is doing a show RIGHT NOW on vaccines and what vaccines are most important for women.

I know you shouldn't base your medical decisions on a show, but it should be interesting to watch.

I understand, and this is just a conversation. And I understand none of us know whats really what...... However, believe me..we're not talking little runny noses.... a sore throat....a little headachy and not feeling quite well.....we're talking down and out SICK.....like stay in bed,,, lay on the couch,,,, go to the doctor ( probably more than once for the same illness ) tons of medication and still sick like crap SICK.   Honest.

Worst part about this conversation is that none of it ( the talk about my sister ) had anything what so ever to do with  Swine Flu...we're talking regular seasonal flu.

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

I came here today knowing this topic would be up. I have read each comment through and would like to add a little of my own.  I am someone who has never taken the seasonal flu vaccine nor have I given it to my children.  This is the first time I am considering a flu type vaccine.  This morning on our local radio show our public health board along with a Dr. Were on air to answer call in questions. Just this past Monday a very healthy 13 year old boy died from H1N1. It has been a confirmed case.  What scares me is this boy was healthy. He was an active 13 year old, who just wasn't feeling well and before the symptoms even became severe he was dead. Also last week the same happened to a 10 year old girl.

My concerns are if this is such a pandemic, why are children 6 months to 5 years of age still only a priority?  I would think all children would be a priority after this. They do not want us taking our children to get this shot unless they are in the age bracket or they have asthma.  To me I think my childs health is just as important, and how long will I have to wait until all of the priority cases have their shots first, but that time it could be to late.

Another thing I do not understand is if this flu is that severe WHY would they not close the schools?  I spoke with our school principle yesterday and his response was they have been directed by the board and by the health unit that all schools will remain open no matter what the numbers are in the classrooms.  The schools also will NOT send home any letters to inform parents of any confirmed cases of H1N1 within the school because it is a breech of privacy. (Why would this be considered a breech of privacy and yet I get notes when a child has been found to have head lice or chicken pox?)  As a parent I want to know if Jimmy who sits next to my daughter has been found to have H1N1. Would there be anything I could do? No But I would not take it so lightly if my daughter says she's not feeling well the next morning.

They (health board) have also said this virus can linger in your system for up to 4-6 weeks.

It was recommended for people with MS.

This shot does not contain any live virus so you will not get sick like you have a chance of with the regular seasonal vaccine.

The Dr's will  not be confirming if you have H1N1 unless you press for it because they do not want their blood labs getting over crowded.

These are just a few of the points addressed today. I did call in to the show and only got 2 questions in, but I really could of taken over the show. I have many many questions about all of this and I'm having a hard time getting straight answers from my Dr., Telehealth, the health unit, and the clinic staff.

I'm actually getting angry about it because I feel like I'm being scared into it, especially after the recent death of this boy.

Sorry I wrote so much, but I really could keep going on this. :)
