    Anal Problem-HELP! (BlackLabbie)

Last night DH had Molson out for a walk. On their walk Molson pooped then scooted. This morning we had Molson (and the other 2) out and he pooped again and scooted....so, I'm thinking his anal glands need to be expressed. I get home call our groomer who does this to make an appointment. Then I noticed Molson licked his bum, so I decided to take a look and it's swollen and bright pink. Any ideas? Should I still have his anal glands expressed? Is it time for the vet (I'm thinking it is)? He's never had an anal gland problem or anal problem before, is 3 years old and is fed Orijen 6 Fish.

Yeah, probably best to go to the vet this time.  This is one of the cockers?  My male had major anal gland issues that didn't start until he was around 4.....

If its swollen and bright pink I would be worried about an abcess.  But, only because thats what I experienced with Buddy.  Vet visit is in order, I believe.  You may not have read the thread a year or so ago when I was dealing with it.  Buddy's rear end was a mushy mess due to an abcess and lick wounds and the vet wanted to remove his glands.  I didn't want him to go through the surgery; and an AG supplement was recommended by an iDogger.  That stuff is a miracle in my mind.  Not sure if you need to go that route or not....but I'm telling you....even my vet is now a believer in the AG powder.  He called me recently to talk about it more because he has another dog/patient with anal gland problems and wanted to try it out on that dog since it worked so well for Buddy.

His poop was normal both times, solid and small. He doesn't have a bad odor usually associated w/ anal glands either. We recently had him buzzed down because he has several hot spots on his belly and it's easiest to put meds on them w/out the fur there. This poor dog is plagued w/ ear infections and (environmental + food) allergies and now this. *sigh*

Vet -- TODAY if you can.  an abscess is nothing to fool with and the vet may have to actually flush out the glands.  Don't just let a groomer do it.  Particularly not now.

The poop won't be discolored (the gland opening is probably too swollen to allow anything to COME out).

If you want to email me or phone me I can teach you how to do this yourself -- it's honestly kinder and easier than vet visits if you keep it done.

Vet, for sure. The groomer would tell you that, anyways. At least, I wouldn't touch a pink, swollen anal gland. That HURTS, and it can break, if you don't do it just right.

My dog has had anal gland problems since I adopted her a year ago.  What is an AG supplement?

I don't have any personal experience but my brothers dog just recently had anal gland issues and had to wear a cone and take medicine.  Hope he's feeling better soon!

This sounds like an anal sac infection, and you should take him to the vet just in case he needs antibiotic therapy or to have it drained.  One thing you can do to prevent this in the future is increase the amount of fiber in your dog's diet.  That helps create a stool that puts enough pressure on the sac to express it as the dog defecates.  Orijen 6 has 3% crude fiber.  This product is a supplement that has 5%:

You could use Metamucil original powder too.  Willow takes 1/2 tsp every night.

yep, sounds like an anal land abscess. Hope he's been in to the vet. If you were unable to be seen during office hours, you can do a warm compress several times a day until you can get him in on Monday

    Re: Anal Problem-HELP! (BlackLabbie)

We went into an animal hospital not too far from us this morning...The vet there basically said his anus just looks chafed from scooting. There is no infection or impacted glands. Molson did need his anal glands expressed though which is why he was scooting after pooping. The vet suspected he was scooting on our carpeted floor and we just weren't seeing it- and there is no smell, believe me I'd know. Mo's still at the vets right now because they are going give him a medicated bath for his skin, shave him down where he has hotspots more than the groomer did, clean them good (he really wasn't letting us near a few of them), and express his glands. He already has an a topica for the hotspots and he gets Benadryl, so we just have to keep on using them. Poor Mo's also going to be wearing a cone until the hotspots are cleared up.

Atopica is rugged stuff - it's a steroid-like drug (not a steroid -- but it IS commonly used as an immune suppressor).  I would tell you to give milk thistle while he's taking it just to protect the liver a bit.  Holler if you want more information.
