    Recall word...

What is your recall word or words you wished you used?

I already use so many "standard" recall commands I'm lost trying to figure out another command word.

We already use ... "come" "c'mere" "with me" "let's go"

I finally got my really reliable recall dvd Smile

My RRR is a whistle.  For our standard recall we use "here!".

T-Bone is just a youngin' but excellent off leash! I've never had a dog who couldn't care less about distractions. I call, he comes. His word is "COME!" or if we're playing, it's "VAMANOS!" that means come on, but cut loose and run circles and go infront if ya want =)

    Re: Recall word...

"Come" is my informal recall; for the GSDs "Hier!" (German - here) is the formal recall.  Sometimes for Coke I go "psssst!! Pssst!" and he comes running.  This is because when my cats used to get into trouble, I'd make this sound like squirting water (which they are terrified of) and they'd stop their trouble-making and split.  Well, running cats is a good time for Coke, so now he is conditioned to come running when I make that sound.

I use "now" and I'm really happy that I did.

I have friends who think that it sounds harsh, but it works for us, & there is never any confussion when I call for my dogs.

    Re: Recall word...

Most of my commands are common words or "me" in origin.  In formal working obedience, I always start with "are you ready to work?" -- and when I've reinforced a long sit (which in itself is difficult sometimes) I use an enthusiastic "Come to MOMMY!" an there's never any dawdling.

Always the name plus "come" or I get all of them.

this isn't recall but it's typical of me.  When I get to the vet because *I* am so slow, I often have to tell them **before** we get out of the car "NO potty -- cos you gotta DONATE when we get in there!"  Then when I get a tech with a pan there, I will say "Ok -- time to donate!"

Yes, I do TO say that!!

Yesterday, Billy had to go to the vet and I was pretty sure there was bloodwork and a urinalysis in his future so i told him in the car he couldn't go "because you gotta DONATE".  And yep -- Dr. B wanted a sample, and sent the tech in -- I told her "When you get outside be *ready* and tell him he's gotta 'donate' and he'll go straight off for you."

She looked at me like I was insane ... but came in about 2 minutes later with a FULL pan and laughed "HE KNOWS THAT WORD!!!"

Yeah -- he does.  And he also knows on the way in that he CAN'T go **because** there's a walk with you in his future.

    Cracked her up.

But my point is -- I usually try to make commands like that something I can say with enthusiasm AND something not commonly said.  A little fun never hurts.

    Re: Recall word...

I mostly use his name. Come on, let's go, come, wanna go? are also used - but usually I just call his name (or clap) and he comes RUNNING. It's very cute - he gets all excited.

Every time he comes to me when I call him - he gets the crap praised out of him. I never want him to think of coming to me as a bad thing - like he can't follow the bird or he has to stop playing - it's always a GOOD thing to go to mommy =]

    Re: Recall word...

We already use "here" to help place them... Would "now" still work even though its also used to get my children moving?

This is not for a normal recall.. but the emergency recall.

I use her name "Tootsie", in a high- pitched, excited voice.

I use "now" on my kids too.  It hasn't affected my dog's recall in any way.

    Re: Recall word...

All my dogs were trained to "come", with a RRR word added if necessary.  Here are the RRR words:

    Sioux - "Now"

    Maska - "Here"

Sequoyah - "KaBean"  (a corruption of Sequoyah bean, her nickname)

They are also trained to an emergency whistle.  You can train a dog to come with multiple signals, so long as you train each one separately so as not to confuse things.  Anyone who doesn't have the RRR DVD should probably get it to see what we mean by all this stuff:-))

My Moms cat does that, too! He was in indoor/outdoor cat (now he's only indoor, at 17 he can barely see anymore) and she would go out call him, "Sam! Sam! Sam!", and after a few second you'd see him hop a fence and start running up the street right up to their house, lol!
