I just got my msgs and abbies iron went from 370 to 314 between fri and wed. Normal high is 226. So it is going down but slowly. Alt was high but not extremely so. He wants to check that again in another week. I think I may get her on some milk thistle as suggested. Where do you find that?

Health food stores carry milk thistle.

Honestly for this I would use both milk thistle and SAMe -- both health store items.

Milk thistle does help detox.  But SAMe is the better detox (and they work incredibly well together).  Your vet would carry Marin and Denosyl (a pharmaceutical grade of both milk thistle and SAMe) but they are pricey.

You can use both milk thistle capsules (USE LOTS -- 4-6 capsules twice a day) or even better use some milk thistle tincture if Abbie will take it (put it in baby food meat or something).  it's alcohol-y -- but it's a bit more potent than the ground herb in capsules.  You can't over-dose milk thistle.

SAMe -- give 400 mg twice a day.  Those will help detox the liver.

I haven't read all the pages of the above but was looking for an Abbie update.

I would also honestly ask about doing some subQ fluids -- or possibly a transfusion -- it would be pricey but it could save her life.  They'd likely need to withdraw some blood and then transfuse some.  But you should be able to use one of the others for a doner (a donor has to be over 40 pounds usually).  But this would be a one time transfusion just to reduce the iron levels.  It's not without risk but it depends on what the vet thinks about reducing the toxicity.

Thanks for asking. No updates yet. We have another vet appt on Monday and will draw more blood then.

I found milk thistle and started her on that (expensive!). Little bugger spits out the capsule though when i hide it in stuff. She'll eat all manner of poisonous things, sharp objects and the like, but won't eat medicine.

Jewels, I'm just seeing this now.  So many good vibes for you & Miss Abbie.  Have you tried opening the milk thistle caps & mix the powder in babyfood or something?

Yes, it's pretty benign tasting -- just mix it into food with something wet.  Then -- order it bulk (I use Leaves and Roots -- http://www.leavesandroots.com ) -- go to the "M" and just order the powder.  $12.75 for a whole POUND of it (which equates to just about 9 bottles of capsules  in herb -- hows THAT for cheaper!!).  Now I have no trouble spending $20 for the minimum order (shoot, I get tea, essential oils I even use for perfum *sigh*).  But I'll send you some if you want.  I've got an extra pound on the top of the fridge.

That's a great price! I will check it out. Thanks Callie.

I have not tried to open up the capsule yet but that's next!

If all else fails, try putting it in some tripe or baby food, and feeding from a spoon.  (When you scrape the spoon upward, the food stays behind the front teeth and they usually swallow it.

I just got back from the vet. We checked her liver this time and not iron blood level. I'm happy to say that her liver is totally normal. Yay!!

Whew. We dodged a bullet on that one! I'm so relieved. Thanks for the well wishes!

Re: I need some Abbie healing vibes :(

Continue with the milk thistle tho -- the liver may be back within norms but it still has to really "heal" and it won't hurt to continue the milk thistle beyond the urgent need.   The holistic vet often says that "soothing" the liver is sometimes the part that doesn't get done and then it's too easily ticked off the next time.
