    Re: rawhide

You will get different answers on this.  I rarely give rawhide.  Sally pulls off big chunks and then vomits them back up (so she never gets it) and Jack is OK with it as long as he is supervised.  HOWEVER, he has to be very carefully supervised because if he can get a huge chunk off and gulp it down, he will--hence the reason I rarely give them.

It really depends on your dog and your individual comfort zone, IMHO.  If you think the rawhide is making her sick, i would try another chew.  Also, there are "safer" rawhide options, such as ground rawhide (rawhide ground up and formed into a hard chew).  My guys go through them very quickly, but since Pearl is smaller they might last longer for her.

    Re: rawhide

On a personal note, I do not give rawhides. I have seen the results of rawhides that have been chewed into a slimy, sticky goo, I`ve seen them vomited up, and I`ve seen the xrays of a dog who swallowed a knot of rawhide and needed it surgically removed. To be honest, I haven`t seen a lot of `good` things about them - other than the fact that dogs like them. But there are lots of things that dogs like that aren`t good for them. When there are better, safer, chews out there, it`s a no for me!!

You might try to find up some bully sticks, which are all natural, untreated bull....parts. Stick out tongue They don`t get as sticky and are far more digestible than rawhide. Or you might get some of the Kong chews and bait them to entice your dog to chew. Nylabones are good, for those dogs that like them. Or heck, a raw meaty bone would do the trick as well!

    Re: rawhide

I do give rawhide fairly regularly now that I've found a brand that uses USA beefhide *and* is fully processed in the USA - Wholesome Hide.  None of my dogs are gulpers and all have solid tummies so the risk of bad side effects is much reduced.  I only give them the large retriever rolls now, though, because Kes started going through the sticks too quickly and the chips are thinner than they used to be.

I don't give rawhides because my dogs swallow big chunks and puke them up.  I give bully sticks for long term chewing or antlers.
