    Watching Dolly

Well, we have a Tropical storm, Dolly  in the gulf that is suppose to be a cat 1 hurricane when it reachs shore  They are saying northern mexico or southern Texas.  however, 3 of the 5 computer models have it coming right here.   It if hit below Corpus we will get the wrose of it as we would be on the righthand side, which is always the worse.

Guess I better start getting things together just in case.  i get so tred so fast i can't leave everything to the last minute.  As of now they are saying it should make land by late Wed. night oThrusday morning.

Sandra...stay safe. us way North are thinking the rains that might come will be nice...BUT always have to remember that a bit of rain here can be the remnant of something that caused a lot fo destruction elsewhere. So finger crossed your area is not in the target zone! Once again...stay safe and be sure to update us!

Back to watching hurricanes again this year *sigh* -- Sandra, I've SOOOO bed there done that!

A category one is pretty small, so don't turn yourself inside out over it.  But being 'ready' pretty much all the time will make your life easier.  Having batteries, snack foods and stuff that can be eaten without cooking  (some tuna and balsamic vinegar, rice cakes, etc. -- stuff that will store for a long time) will make an easy stash.  Peanuts, dry cereal that can be eaten from your hand, etc.

The other thing I like to keep is a small one burner stove IF YOU HAVE a garage or something that you can open the door on.  You can't operate a little stove like that inside, but if you have a quasi protected area so you can be where there is air circulation while you cook something -- it can make life a lot easier if you can make a hot cup of instant coffee or soup once in a while.

The upside is that in October - December you won't have to buy stuff like paper towels and stuff because you'll have them to use out of your disaster kit!!

We adopted Billy literally about 3 days before Hurricane Charlie -- he thought "normal" was all of us huddled in a one room motel room munching on snack food all day!  LOL -- poor dog thought he would always have to hurry to the potty "in between bands".

Plan slow but keep your sense of humor.

I went to Walmart and got several cases of water and jugs of water, batteries, small cans of fruit and meat and all the snack and dry food things i could find not loaded with carbs and sugar--remember i am new diabtetic.  I already have a ton of andles and several good flashlights.

Our house is total electric, so i did get bags of charcoal (match light) that can be used if electricity is out and the rain stop.  I will  fill bathtubs and 5 gallon buckets with waterh for flusg an cleaning if needed.

We are actually on a pennesula and on one side the water is 2 miles, on the other side it is about 3 mils.  We are 12 feet above sea level (yes we do have lood insurance) and in this little town, if the electrictiy even thinks a storm is coming, it goes off.  Same with phone service.  I HATE cell phones, but got one today with prepaid minutes so i can at least call jerry if phone service is down and out.

My boys are coming to baord up the house and i will go stay in the hotel where my one DIL is night manager.  It was built to withstand hurricanes and she has to stato run tigs.  They alow dogs an she can get me a dog discount.  Besides, I couldn't stayin this house with windows all boarded up.  AND we have a huge sycamore tree just 15 feet from bay window in diningroom and another just about 12 feet from our bedroom window and i worry about them coming down on the house.

Do you take insulin or other meds for your diabetes? I know it's obvious, but make sure you have plenty of meds on hand. You never know what's going to happen, especially in hurricane season!
    • Gold Top Dog

Yes, i got refills today.  I take for diabetes and one for hypothyroidism--both discovered at the same time a little over a month ago.  My tyroid level should have been between 0.3 and 5.1 and it was 15.7.  I tink the mds may bet starting to work.  I was sleeping 16 hours a day, ad now I go with about 12.  And I seem to have a little more energ.  I can't have cataracts removed untilthose things get in order.

And now it seems I have a problem with my blood pressure.  Toay it was 88/48  Mine has run a littlr lower, but not like that....and this was after i had spent time doing some yard work.  lately it as been in the 90's/upper 50's.

We have a beach house in Galveston. The real estate company who handles renting it our for us has decided to go ahead & board the windows just in case.

Sandra, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Dolly will go easy on you, & that you blood pressure improves.

The last I saw is that it is still a tropical storm with sustained winds of 50 mph and will probably hit Brownsville.

But the projected rain will get as far north as S.H. 105 or S.H. 6 but won't make it as far as the DFW area, thank to a high pressure cap in place. In fact it looks to be rainless from about Lake Somerville, Texas to the northern border of Oklahoma.

Still thinking of you as Dolly makes landfall as a Category 2...stay safe!

Well we are under hurricane watch, tropical storm warning, flood warning, and tornado warning.  Two tornadoes have been picked up on radar, one only a few miles from our house.  Are getting lots of rain, but so far the wind has not been to bad.    You would think that with the eye of the hurricane 120 miles away things would be be fine here.  It was not til iwe moved to the coast that i found out how far reaching one of those suckers really is.

My sister liges over 100 miles inland in North Carolaina, yet hurricane Fran ( I hink it was Fran) did a lot of damage to their roof and took out a lot f trees in thier fields.  Just never know with these tihngs.

    • Gold Top Dog

Thank you for checking in Sandra...glad for now things are okay...hope those tornados keep their distance from you and your area...stay safe!

I don't envy anyone who has to deal with these hurricanes, but I guess the good side is that they do give you time to prepare a little. I hope you ride it out without any problems but I'll be thinking about you thru the day.

My best friend lived in the Raleigh, NC area when Fran struck and they had a bunch of damage too, so these things can have far reaching damage.

Sandra -- you are on my heart this morning for sure!  Stay safe -- Billy says the BESTEST place in a hurry-cane is a "beddytimes away place" -- everbuddy's friendly an ya gots ta go potty dodgin the BANDS!!!" -- *hugs* Take care!!

    • Gold Top Dog

WELL, THINGS ARE SUPPOSE TO START GOING DOWNHILL AS THE DAY GOES ON.  THE 'CANE ISN'T GOING TO MAKE A DIRECT HIT ON BROWNSVILLE AS THEY THOUGHT, BUT ABOVE IT.  THAT IS GOOD NES FOR BROWNSVILLE.  I HOPE IT COMES IN SOON AND DOES'T KEEP EDGING THIS WAY.  THEY SAY THERE IS A PRESSURE SOMETHING THAT IS GONNA MAKE IT TURN  WEST.  HOPE THAT IS SOON.

EVERY FEW MINUTES MY TV IS DOING THAT 'HORN' THING AND A TORMADO WARNING IS BEING SHOWN.  THE LATEST ONE IS FOR ROCKPORT WHICH IS ABOUT 12 MILES UP ON THE COAST FROM US.  ..THERE GOES THE HORN AGAIN.  ACTUALLY STARTING TO MAKE ME A LITTLE JITTERY.

SAY OUR WINDS SHOULDN'T BE OVER 60 MPh THIS AFTERNOON.  RIGHT NOW THERE ISN'T EVEN A LEAF BLOWING!  SO STRANGE.

THINKING MAYBE I SHOULD EAT MY SUPPER FOR LUNCH.  MADE SOME CHICKEN AND RICE DAY BEFORE YESTERDAY AND ATE IT THE LAT 2 NIGHTS--WITH BEETS ND TOSSED SALAD--AND PLANNED TO EAT THE REST TONIGHT--THERE GOES THE HORN AGAIN--BUT IF WE GOT THOSE WNDS, OUR POWER WILL PROBALY GO OFF.  yP, THINK HOT LUNCH AND THEN SANDWICH FOR SUPPER.

dARN, POWER BETTER NOT GO OFF BEFORE I GO TO BED TONIGHT.  I WATCHED SARAH, PLAIN AND TALL MONDAY  NIGHT,THEN SARAH, PLAIN AND TALL:SKYLARK LAST NIGHT AND TONIGHT IS SARAH PLAIN AND TALL, ;WINTERS END.  I LOVE THAT TRILOGY.
