My cat is losing/thinning hair in patches

I have a long haired black cat, and her hair is thinning or she is completely losing it in patches, especially in the back, around her tail, back legs, and lower back. Any ideas what may be causing this?

A few things to consider: fleas, diet (what does she eat?) environmental allergies. Does she go outside? Could she have gotten into anything? Is she really itchy? is her skin red?

could be overgrooming.

My cat had the same and it was overgrooming. The vet told us that here in Venezuela is almost impossible to find some drugs to reduce his anxiety, but a lot of attention work out. You should watch him carefully.

There are MANY homeopathic remedies that reduce stress. Bach Flower Essences Rescue Remedy is one, there are literally dozens of others available online or through your local natural health store. Even simple herbs like lavendar can reduce stress.

This exact thing happened to one of my cats and it turned out to be food allergies. As soon as I switched her to high quality holistic grain-free natural foods ( Wellness Core and wellness grain-free canned , Taste of the Wild, Innova Evo canned, Nature's Instinct raw medallions, California Natural Salmon and Sweet potato canned ) and it stopped almost instantly and now her coat is thicker and more luxurious, shiny and soft than ever. Also make sure she gets supplements of Brewers Yeast and Garlic tablets, salmon or flax oil in the diet as well.

Yep me... to exactly, food allergies. Medium length fur black cat who would lose it periodically. Once I changed his food from Science Diet (yuk) to Innova, different cat. He is gorgeous now and much much healthier. Bonus...I rarely see a hairball or vomit on my rugs any more.
