    =( I hope it's not cancer.

Maisie is almost 9 months old. She just came out of heat about a week ago and her teats are sagging a little. I'm worried because its feels like there are lumps. They arn't hard but her teats arn't just loose skin. I'm really worried that they might be tumors because my previous dog had mammory tumors that most likey resulted in her death. She is scheduled to get spayed in March. I'm prepared to spend my birthday money on a vet visit. (my parents want to wait until March.)  I really hope it's just a false pregnancy [:(] Sorry for all the rambling..I'm just really worried.

I think it would be rare to see cancer in a nine month old bitch, although I'm sure it happens.  If you have money for a vet visit, why not just take her in for the spay?   There's an organization called Friends of Animals that provides low cost spay/neuter certificates at participating vets.  If you Google, you'll find them.  I would think your parents would help if they knew how worried you really are - have you talked to them about it?

The teats will swell while in heat.  The first time I saw this with Rose, I got really scared.  Of course, I am a worrier!

Well, yes I've talked to my parents about it, but all they've said was not to worry. The reason I'm waiting until March is because I wanted to wait 3 months after her heat so there would be less complications during the spay. I guess I'll wait a month and see if it gets and better..or worse..[&o]

Meaghan -- don't wait 3 months -- she's a small dog, and she *could* go back into heat before you get her spayed again.

If she's not acting 100% completely normal in a week or so take her to the vet -- it's not at all unheard of for a young dog like that to get pyometra and it's a nasty disease.  typically a vet will spay around 3 weeks after her heat cycle --

It's hard when you have a problem with one dog not to anticipate it in another -- but your best defense is having her checked by the vet.  And you are 100% completely sure she's not pregnant right?

Yes, I'm sure she's not pregnant. She only went outside supervised in a fenced yard. The swelling seems to have gone down a little...

ETA: I can't take worrying any more. I told my mom the make an appointment for after school tomorrow...I hope she'll be ok...

Good -- I'm sure that makes you feel easier.  and I wasn't trying to cast doubts on you ... but I don't know you well, so I can't assume you would know all the precautions to take with her while she was in heat.

The appointment will stop your worry.  Really, I don't think you have anything to worry about.  Rose had the same issue during her first heat, and I freaked out.  Some dogs teats swell more than others during heat.  Rose is one that does.  I kept thinking, what if she has cancer?  what if she somehow got with a male?  what if, what if?  In the end, the worrying didn't do any good.  It took a couple of weeks for her to be more normal, but her teats never went back down to pre-heat size.

She's fine! The vet says everything feels normal! Luckily he didn't charge me anything..Thanks everyone!
