    Sunday Chat

I won't complain about our 108 degrees yesterday after seeing Cathy's temps.  We're having a nice gentle rain shower right now.  It will be steamy later but the plants are loving it.

I would love to do absolutely nothing all day except read and watch mindless TV.  That ain't happening. lol

Not for me either :(. I started the morning by trying to clean up the candle wax that melted all over the deck. I'd moved the candle and stand out of the sun but apparently it was still too hot. What a mess!

DH had to leave for work at 5:30 and I know his back is hurting and he's beat. I hope he has a quiet shift, especially with this heat. We got our bedroom put together yesterday and I know we slept better than we had in a week. Now I need to get the massive amounts of clothes dumped in piles in the closet organized and I'll feel a lot better. I ended up ordering those curtains from Overstock yesterday and I hope they'll look good. We need something that really darkens room, so I hope these work and look good.

ETA - I forgot to mention that a wonderful forum friend sent me a msg about curved curtain rods. I was able to find a corner piece to connect both rods without having to hang them separately. Yay!!

Tracy - I saw something a piece on our news about searchers having spotted the body of a missing hiker on Mt. Hood. Was that your local dentist? If so, I'm sorry. The news didn't sound optimistic about him still being alive. :(

    • Gold Top Dog

Yes, a body was spotted by the crews in the helicopters yesterday, and the clothing is consistent with what he was wearing.  The extreme warm weather is making it too dangerous to put crews on the ground there to recover the body (avalance risks), but the family gave a statement on the news last night basically acknowledging that it's him.  I'm sure they want his body to be retrieved so they can determine the cause of death.  I really hope it was something quick like a heart attack, and not that he was severely injured and suffered a long while awaiting help.

DH said it might be a cliche, but hopefully his loved ones get a little comfort knowing he died doing something he truly loved to do, one of his greatest passions.  It's still terribly sad -- he was only 59, and he was very involved in the local community.  We're keeping his family and friends in our thoughts, as well as all the people who worked in his dental practice for years.  He was such a nice man; it was actually enjoyable to see him on dental visits.  Rest easy, Dr. Adams.  Wilted Flower

On a much lighter note, I'm glad you found a curtain rod solution, Cathy.  I had no idea that kind of rod was available!

Crazy hot again here today.  My friend and I walked, and I asked her to stop 3 or 4 times along the way.  I really can't handle exertion in high temps.  DH happened to drive by during our route (coming from the grocery store), and he gave us bottles of water, thankfully.  When I came in the house, my head get SO hot; I had to put cold towels on it.  DH said it's like cooking a steak -- you take it off the grille, and as it rests, the internal temp rises.  I felt over-cooked, that is for sure!!

Indoor chores today for me -- and nothing too high energy!

Awww Tracy - I'm sorry that things didn't turn out differently for the wonderful dentist. I too hope that he didn't suffer and that his family takes comfort in knowing he was doing what he enjoyed. I'm not sure that's as much consolation now as it is down the road.

I don't deal well with the heat either. When we were really pushing hard on Friday, I started feeling dizzy but I was still sweating like crazy, so I figured I wasn't in a danger zone. I tried to drink a lot of water but when you're hustling, it's easy to forget. Later that evening, I had a really bad headache that I'm sure was also heat-related. We don't drop from the 100s until late in the week and then it's only to the mid to high 90s :(

I got the closet organized - woohoo!!! It was actually kind of fun and super satisfying when it was all done. It's a little bigger than the one we had, so that made things a bit easier. I still have much to do in other areas but I'm going to take a nap 1st and hope to wake up with more energy.

I can't believe you guys are having those kinds of temps. I would be melting along with the candles ;p

My brother and I took my nieces on an impromptu camping excursion last night. We goofed around making up stories around the campfire and went hiking this morning. Totally what I needed after last week. And my little trailer makes it so easy to just pick up and go :)

I started watching hemlock grove on Netflix. It's just off enough to keep my interest. I am tempted to get cable again for the next few months so I can watch the last season of dexter and breaking bad

Oh no, so sad about your dentist, Tracy.

I was just looking at the race results and I got beat by not one or two but three 6-year-olds! It wasn't by much, but MAN! I can't believe kids that young can run that fast for that long. Crazy.

Also, the person that came in first finished in 15 min, 28 sec. How is that even possible? That just blows my mind. That's sprinting at 12 mph the whole time - 3.2 miles.

    • Gold Top Dog

Tracy, I am so sorry. Doing something he loved will hopefully bring some measure of comfort for the family down the road. It sure sounds like a big loss for your community.

Given that you FINISHED the race, I say WELL DONE. Remember, those little kids are little!

Not much here--the mosquitoes are everywhere. (I do not understand how moquitoes and ticks are needed anywhere!) I even broke down and got some bug spray just so I could be outside for more than 5 seconds. I found Mr./Mrs. Snake today while mowing, so I stopped.  I figured the snake can take as long as needed to move. I'm in no rush. The good thing is we have no known poisonous snakes on the island. But, they still scare the heck out of me.

The Red Sox just won, so life is good :-)

Dogfood is done, many misc. tasks done.  I was however awakened most IR-REVERNTLY this morning.

I heard the sound of the pug chewing "plastic" beside the bed.  The pug, and I love her, is a THIEF.  Of grand theft size.

I rolled over quietly to 'catch' her.  She has one of my zippered cases from my purse -- ZIPPED OPEN, removing "treasures" one at a time.

I must preface this saying -- it is well known the pug is a thief.   She will take things out of my purse and scatter them all over the house but typically in the path between my side of the bed and where my purse is in the bathroom.  EVERYTHING in my purse has to be zipped in a cosmetic bag (and I have FIVE).  and in none of those are there ANY cosmetics.  medicines, check book, reading glasses, notepad, pen/stylus.  NOTHING can be loose in my purse or it falls prey to the THIEF.

Now -- cosmetic bags are no longer inviolate.  She stole something that had MEDICINE in it out of a purse that sits IN the bathtub (another effort to keep her out of it), ZIPPED UP.

On one hand it's laughable.  I am NOT laughing.  The particular zip she stole has Tylenol in it.  Literally one is FATAL to a dog her size.

Because of the arthritis I can't manage "childproof caps".  I *have to* carry meds with me.  I have to keep the purse light enough so *I* can manage it.  So I carry them in small plastic "dose" zip bags INSIDE zippered bags.  Or sometimes inside other containers I can open.

Up til now the zippered cosmetic bags has kept her out of harmful stuff.  And typically she's not interested IN the zippered bags -- only individual "treasures" (like my frigging KEYS) that she strews all over the house!  I have a cosmetic bag for glasses and checks, one for hand creams, one for meds, etc.Even gum and -- heaven forbid -- candy have to stay in a zippered bag.

I'm going to have to get a locking trash can for IN the bathroom to have my purse in.  Since I've been sick even 5 steps has been beyond me so even hanging my purse on the door of the bathroom won't work because I can't "reach" it when I need it.

Thief.  Little stinker was SO close to that darned Tylenol (and of course extra strength Tylenol has that sweet coating on it?? And she smells it!)

I overheated today, brains are fried. Last week I took out four shrubs and decided that the ginormous privet hedges needed to come out too. There were four of them. I checked them for active nests and went to work. I took all of them down, and sorted out the wood into the foliage and small stuff and the heavy wood. I also burned some of the 'small stuff' but have plenty left, the wood will need to age. I also decided that the pecan tree needed to be trimmed because he was hanging low in some areas, real low. All in all I did about 4.5 hrs in extreme humidity, I drank a ton but not nearly enough apparently. My hands, shoulders and neck are sore! Too much sawing LOL

Anyway its done. DH removed most of the stumps but made a mess doing so, a mess I won't be cleaning up!

Our daily storm has arrived so no worries about the fire pit remaining hot Hmm

And that's all I've got. I took an aspirin, had fruit and salad to eat and would love a nap but will stay up as long as possible and hopefully sleep very well

Tracy, I saw a story in our local paper about your dentist.  So sad for his family, friends and the community.  It's always so shocking to know someone who dies unexpectedly even if your relationship was professional.  I hope he didn't suffer and that his body is recovered soon.

We got a great rain storm this morning.  It started out gentle and got more and more intense. The sun has just now come out and the temps were very mild today.  I don't think we reached 90.

Karen, I'm sorry you overdid it today with the shrubs.  Sending restful vibes your way.

I'm making fried chicken in my cast iron skillet.  I rarely make fried chicken but I had some huge drumsticks in the freezer that I bought on sale and they seemed to be insisting on being fried. :)  Made some potato salad to go with so we're having a picnic.  Great way to end the weekend.

Jackie, when's dinner? That sounds delicious!

Karen, it sounds like you did major work! I'll send down the chainsaw, so the tree removal goes faster. Did Bugsy "supervise"?

    Jackie! You tease!! Yum!!

Kate I was using a small electric chain saw until the chain broke. Not sure if you will recall but it was the huge shrubs next to the front door. The problem now is that some of the remaining shrubs ( mostly the nandinas) just might be next. I feel so bad for the birds, skinks, toads and frogs though. I disturbed a whole bunch of toads and skinks today :(

Yes Bugsy supervised most of the time, well after chasing squirrels, stealing anything I put in the wheelbarrow, playing in his pool, etc. eventually he laid down overseeing things from the comfort of one of his blankets in the shade.

I feel better except for the headache, it's nothing just uncomfortable.

Very true, Jackie.  It's been so strange to be monitoring this story very closely all week because of our "personal" connection to it.  Sadly, there are reports of lost climbers on Mt. Hood every year, and while I feel sad for those involved, I generally give the stories only a casual listen because I don't know the climbers, and it's "just" a lost climber story that we hear too often.  I think I mentioned a while back that DH had to have some major dental work done this year, and he's been in the early prep appointments with our dentist.  So, he just saw Dr. A. the week before he went on this climb.  I've only seen him once or twice a year, but DH has spent lots of time with him in recent months.  :-(

Janice, 6-year olds running marathons?  I know parents sometimes push their kids to achieve, but I don't know about that . . . !

Karen, I'm surprised you can move after all you did today -- heat or no heat!  Other than my walk, I only did indoor work today.  I'm sitting on the patio now because it's finally comfortable out here.

Kate, if I had a Mr. or Miss Snake living in my yard, I'd have to give up the lawnmowing permanently and hire someone else to do it.  Eeeek!

Callie, I think there's a potential money-making invention in your story:  dog-proof medicine bottle tops and dog-proof handbags.  Something easy for humans to open, but impossible for dogs (or for very clever Pug thieves).  Silly Tink . . . I'm glad she didn't get into the Tylenol!

    • Gold Top Dog

Callie, what about one of those key chain fob pill holders? They're not child proof, but they're metal, and maybe it would be hard for her to open but hopefully not for you.

I have a timbuk2 messenger bag. I want to say my bag could be pushing 10 years old. It's dirty looking, and the velcro is going, so I will really need to replace it soon, but it has served me well, and prevented many a child from breaking in because they can't open the clips. None of the dogs have taken anything from it so far. I have another big one that I have used as a book bag or for travel also. They're expensive, at least to me, although seeing what some people spend on bags I supposed they're cheap. I just won't get a white or off white panel ever again.

Yes, Tracy I am also so very sorry.  When it's someone relatively young that you know and work with -- whether a professional you "go" to or whatever -- it's difficult enough to lose that person to even something like a heart attack, but to go missing like that -- it just leaves everyone involved who knew them bereft.  I'm sure that has hit your husband particularly hard.  So sorry.

I know Tink is a silly girl -- this particular little "training issue" has gone on a long time, and I've always been so **uber** careful because I was afraid of her getting into some medicine.  She uses those little paws just like they were hands with opposible thumbs.  silly and funny but by the time I made sure she didn't get into the Tylenol I was actually in tears.  Trying to keep my sense of humor but .. rattled.

Karen -- the skinks, etc. come to MY yard because of some blinking neon sign above that says "This lady doesn't do anything but Mow!!  LUNCH!!!"
