    Decorating help needed

Our new master bedroom has a slider and window right next to each other and I need to get them covered ASAP. I'm just not sure what to use. I've had verticals on my bedroom slider at the other house and although they're not very fashionable, I love that I can open them all the way, just a little or not at all. I don't think verticals are an option. I like the look.  But, would you have to use four panels to cover the door ?

Those windows look very similar to the windows in my friend's master bedroom, only hers is a big set of French doors on one side, and a huge window on the other.  What she has that looks very nice is the style of curtain like the ones in that Overstock link, only hers are white and very "flowy" (if you know what I mean).  Her bedroom is very "beachy" looking --- light colors, very open --- so it's almost like the view outside to their garden kind of extends into the bedroom.  It's very spa-like.

She's got 3 or 4 panels, too -- she pulls different ones open or closed, depending on where she wants some privacy or not (one panel can be pulled to the side when they want to open one side of the French doors, for example).  The fabric is quite sheer because they don't need 100% privacy due to how thick their backyard is landscaped.  It looks like your yard is private, too --- but personally, I feel uncomfortable having things open at night like that -- you never know who is lurking around out there!  Also, I need a very dark bedroom to sleep and don't like early morning light, so I'd prefer room darkening curtains like the ones in your link, Cathy.

We had verticals in our old house on our slider, and they were practical, but they don't feel as "stylish" anymore, so I don't blame you for looking for some other ideas!

I wondered the same thing, although I could probably use only one panel on the window, right?

Yeah, that looks like it would only need one panel.  But the door panels should be even (2 or 4) so it doesn't look lopsided when you open them up.  The only other thing I was thinking would you be able to get a nice decorative curtain rod long enough to fit the door.

Yes, the yard has a lot of trees and such and it backs up to a reservoir but I'd still feel creepy knowing anyone could see in and DH is even more bothered by that than I am. I may need to go with something like the overstock curtains for now because they're relatively inexpensive and we need something up there quickly. What I also don't know is what color to choose. The room is painted in a sort of moss green, which actually matches my bedding beautifully but makes picking a curtain color tricky. Oy...I need an interior decorator.

But with 3, you could pull one to each side and just leave one hanging in the middle. Not a good look? ;)

and I hadn't thought about the rod length. I have a couple that are long and really nice but I'm not sure they're quite that long.

It doesn't appear that the former owner had anything up...ever. There's no rods, no holes, nothing. I think I know why now.

What color is the carpeting (or is it hardwood or tile)?  Depending on the colors in your bedding, could you go with just an off-white or cream or tan/beige -- something neutral?

I know some people find it fun, but I truly hate making decorating decisions.  That's why much of our house stayed undecorated for years, and we still don't have curtains in any rooms (just blinds).  Paint color choices stress me out enough.  Yes, if I had the budget, I'd hire a professional decorator to do all of it!

I don't know  . . . I kind of like everything even.  This becomes a real problem when I'm drinking beer and eating pizza.  If I have half a can of beer left but no pizza, I have to get another slice.  On the flip side, if I have a couple bites of pizza left and no beer, I have to get another can.  Probably why I always need to lose ten pounds.

My sister has an excellent eye for decorating, but she tends to go for a more "bohemian" look.  She has huge bay windows in her apartment that look out onto a busy street in downtown Boston.  It's 3 separate windows forming the bay shape, so she has 3 panels.  She pulls the ones on either side to the left or right (accordingly), and the middle one she ties in the center with a pretty cord or braid of fabric (I forget what it is, but it's very casual looking).

I don't know how long rods can be -- as long as they have a supporting bracket in the middle somewhere, I'd think they could be pretty long.

Too funny, Deb!  I have an OCD-type habit that affects how I eat M&Ms.  I have to eat them in pairs, and I prefer to lay them out in front of me in certain patterns, depending on the color mix in the handful I grabbed.  One lone M&M messes it all up, so I have to get another one.  Like you said, it can cause extra calories to be eaten over a period of time!!  Big Smile

Edited to add:  I meant to say that I've heard that odd numbers should be used when decorating (I think Nate Berkus used to say that on his show, and I've heard it elsewhere, too).  So, if you're putting items on a mantle or table top to decorate, you should do arrangements of 3, 5, 7, instead of matching pairs.  My OCD parts would have trouble with that!

But would you be able to pull a curtain across a supporting bracket ? Not being snarky - something I just don't know.

LOL!! You guys are both funny!!! Thanks for the help and advice. I think I'm going to make a trip to JC Penney's tomorrow and see what I can find. Decorating stresses me out too and more so when I'm trying to find things online. The carpeting is a taupe color, so a taupe or beige might work but it's hard to tell what those colors really look like from a picture. With most everything else, I've decided to give myself some time actually living in the house before I buy anything. It's just that the curtain thing feels urgent. There's not even a rod up to hang a sheet from but I guess we may have tin foil taped up for the first night or 2. That'll bring back some memories ;)

Deb - good for you for thinking of that. We actually tried to put curtains up in our current home when we put the slider in and found that to be a problem. In addition, if you can't slide the curtains past the bracket on one side (to the non-opening side), then you need to have extra long rods, so you can pull it far enough away from the door opening to get in and out and not have it blowing out with you. Crap - I'd forgotten about that. Thanks for bringing it up and how fast can you get here?

How fast can you whip up a pitcher of Vodka and peach iced-tea (heavy on the Vodka) ??
